The final edition of Foundation RISCWorld, a bi-monthly CD-based magazine published by APDL, has been posted to subscribers this month after editor Aaron Timbrell decided to call it a day.Aaron, who is a former RISCOS Ltd director and heads VirtualAcorn, took the decision after the workload of producing the magazine became too much for his recent poor health. He also blamed in-fighting in the RISC OS scene and claimed abuse aimed at him and publisher Dave Holden, also a ROL director, had put him off.
The magazine, which started off as RISCWorld but only just recently absorbed ROL's newsletter Foundation, had been in production for nine years and posted 55 issues to subscribers around the world. Each issue featured roughly 20,000 words and took over 3 weeks to write, edit, proof and publish. The CDs, on which the articles were supplied, were usually filled with useful software and other resources related to a particular issue's content.
In his final editorial this month, Aaron, who also runs a web and print design business, wrote: "As some readers know my health isn't great and over the last couple of years I've found editing the magazine increasingly difficult. The amount of time I can spend working has now become limited, with the result that I can't carry on doing all the jobs that I am contracted to do. Something has got to give."
He added: "In addition both Dave Holden and myself are heartily sick of the abuse directed at us from some sections of the RISC OS 'community'. Both of us have worked incredibly hard to keep RISC OS afloat over the years and to constantly be attacked by some 'RISC OS users' wears one down over time.
"Despite the best efforts RISC OS still seems to be polarized around two camps. It's ridiculous. Fighting each other will only end one way, with everyone dead. Attempts to reconcile the situation always get sabotaged sooner or later. So, frankly, stuff it. We are both going to carry on doing our own things. Life is too short to try to convince idiots who don't rely on RISC OS to stop shouting and start thinking."
One subscriber told Drobe.co.uk: "So this is another blow for RISC OS. I am quite sad about this one as I really enjoyed getting RISCWorld with all the software included on the CD, admittedly it was mainly from the internet, but it was good having it all in one place.
"It's all a bit strange, really. RISCWorld only just merged with Foundation a few issues ago.
"Another thing is that none of the other articles in the magazine hinted at this closure, which was announced in the main editorial, and the Iyonix help column asked for more contributions for next issue. Was this possibly a last minute decision?"
Aaron said he hoped to be able to spend more time on his VirtualAcorn business and other projects. He was not available for immediate comment.

Midland Christmas show this Saturday
The Midland Christmas 2008 RISC OS show is fast approaching - pencil Saturday, December 6 in your diaries. For the organisers, the Midlands User Group, this is a big challenge. While they co-organised the last one with the ARM Club, the organisation for this year's event has been primarily a MUG affair.
