RISCOS Ltd issues bug-fix update to Select subscribers

RISCOS Ltd has managed to produce an OS upgrade with no discernable user-facing features because the programming team has been "concentrating on lower-level support and in consolidating and optimising the existing feature set based in part upon feedback from users" - quite possibly the most fanciest way of saying they've fixed bugs and tidied up the code. Although there's little further detail at this point, we'll try our best to uncover precisely what's changed in RISC OS 6.16, aka Select 5i2.

It's good that the select scheme is back on track with regular updates - I think this must be my third under my current one-year subscription.

I think it's fair enough to periodically stop and say focus on consolidation.

With a code-base the age of RISC OS, I'd go as far as to say there should be a significant chunk of effort spent each release on refactoring and rework.

But we're in danger of being too harsh on ROL here. Reading the press release, they say this is a stability and performance improvements release, which is far enough (and I'd count those changes as customer-facing personally). Shame there's no real headline feature here though.

It is nice to see the Select back on track and that developments now appear to be being released on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, small development teams take time to get things done. This means that a "headline feature" may not appear in every release.

No need for headline features really, its reassuring that they're apparently going through the code with such a fine comb.

Is anyone able to give a speed comparison between 4.02, 4.39 and 6? I would check the website, but I fear it.

Monty, you may want to look at [link] for more information about what has changed in RISC OS 6. The RISC OS 6 site is much better layed out than the main RISCOS.com one. This site containes info about what has changed in each release of version 6.

RISC OS 6 will run over RISC OS 4 and RISC OS Adjust ROMS.

I've been running RO6.14 on an A7000+ with 4.02 ROMs since I got the CD in Dec/Jan. Just downloaded the newest 6.16 but haven't installed it yet.

Haven't managed to get RO6 to boot on the Omega yet, however. I suspect that it's something to do with RO6's new video code - ROL no longer haven an Omega so can't do any testing for that platform.

We have had reports from some Omega users that the latest Select does run. However it will very much depend on what generation of motherboard you have. However as has been pointed out we don't have an Omega, and frankly if the problem is due to differences / bugs in earlier versions of Omega motherboards, then there may not be anything we could do to fix it anyway.
