OCR tool STRing updated

Published: 28th Apr 2009, 21:52:45 | Permalink | Printable

STRing, developed by Mark Beerling, takes images of scanned documents and extracts the text out of them so the words can be reused and edited elsewhere. This new version is reportedly faster and can accept template files to help with its character recognition.

According to the site, the version of !STRing is still v2.2.0 from February.

Still, news of applications still under active development is always good news.

Initial results not bad. I'm running this new version on RISC OS 5.13. Scanning document at the scanners highest resolution may help to improve the quality of the sprite and subsequent OCR processing. 300 dpi is normal but 600dpi might be better - I haven't done any thorough testing to prove this however. Keep up the good work Mark.
