Newsbase comeback: Welcomed return of the email/news applicationBy Chris Williams. Published: 12th Apr 00:20:49 | Permalink | Printable
If you're on the internet with RISC OS you've probably encountered NewsBase at some point. Written by Graham Allan, Newsbase is an email and usenet database that supports single or multiple users and is usually found with its best friend, Messenger, an email client from Mark Sawle. Newsbase basically stores, manages and neatly files your emails and usenet postings for you. Newsbase, along with other key applications like Messenger, Popstar and Newshound, forms part of the popular standard freeware RISC OS internet family and this report will be of great interest to existing Newsbase users.
Despite there being a two year gap of non-development, Newsbase has always proved its usefulness and flexibility. Today however, it has been reported that Graham is actively returning to Newsbase to continue development; two new versions have thus appeared on the Newsbase site.
In an article on the iconbar.com, editor Nick reports,
"For the first time in over two years, Newsbase is being actively developed again. There have been many bug fixes since version 0.60m and several new features are beginning to appear.
The current development version is 0.66b (9th April 2001) and features, among other things, redesigned user setup windows, simplified group protection levels and SSL (Secure Socket Layers) support. If, on the other hand, you're feeling a little less adventurous, the current 'stable' version is 0.64b (28th March 2001)"
I have installed the stable 0.64 version and at this point in time, I'm already impressed.
