Watch the trailer of BBC's Acorn versus Sinclair history docu-drama

By Daniel Jones. Published: 21st Aug 2009, 17:51:01 | Permalink | Printable

The BBC have a uploaded a trailer on the BBC 4 website showing scenes from Micro Men, a drama that "provides an affectionately comic account of the race for home computer supremacy in the 1980s". It was previously titled Syntax Era, but the name was changed after executives feared non-geeks wouldn't get the pun. The programme charts the battle between Acorn and Sinclair, and stars Martin Freeman (The Office) as Acorn co-founder Chris Curry and Alexander Armstrong (Armstrong and Miller) as Sir Clive Sinclair.

I've a bad feeling it'll be heavily Sinclair biased... ...but I'm still looking forward to it!

So they gave the role of Chris Curry to the guy that played Arthur Dent in the film...

Although that is actually a quite circular ref as Easi/Techwriter were originally written for Douglas Adams... :-)

Is this true?

If it is, it only adds to the myth! 42

I dont think so. I don't have time to check (going skiing in 1 hour) but I'm sure the chaps that wrote easiwriter also wrote macauthor. I think THGTTG was written wih macauthor.

Could be wrong though. Off on the piste. :-) well xscape glasgow :-(

Cheers Bob

Didn't know what the mac app was called but yes what eventually became easiwriter was started on the mac and was used by snr Adams - am guessing that some of his later works were written using it

There was a version of easiwriter that ran on the mac. I remember seeing it but it was upsidedown. Dont know if they ever got it going. I thinmk it was halted when the chap who wrote the code died. Was he called Bob?

regards Bob

I look forward to it. I'm a big Sinclair fan and still have my speccys. From about 93/94 onwards, a friend got me into Acorns, including selling me my first- an A3010. Got my first RPC about 2003 from Dave Holden. Theses days I use emulation of both Sinclairs and Acorns on my laptop, so have the best of all worlds. I really look forward to the show.

I don't do celebrity culture, but Sinclair, Wilson and Curry are up there with my 'heroes'.

It's a shame the execs didn't have the courage of their convictions on the title. I really don't see that calling it 'Micro Men' instead of 'Syntax Era' will make it any more relevant to The Kids. Still, I live in hope.

The documentary on Elite that was on a few years back was good and taught me to pronounce Braben's name, even if there wasn't anything in there I hadn't already learned from 'Backroom Boys'.

OK, somebody please explain to me the joke that some apparently see in in "Syntax Era". a play on "Sinclair"?

'Syntax error', as seen in BASIC when a program has a typo or some other typing error, usually.

hawwumph. the words "error" and "era" do not sound at all alike, except to the southern English, who simply do not know what to do with the letter R, so they just let their tongues go limp. ask a Scot. or a Canadian.

OK, so it's a bit tongue in cheek, as everything insists to be these days when it comes to retro.

I will be watching it, but why does TV need to be so "Easy watching" these days (Yeah, I do know, rhetorical question and all that stuff)

I have been heavily involved with this film and from the limited amount of edited footage that I've seen, I can assure you it'll be good! It's a lighthearted portrail of these two companies rivalry to dominate the home computer market of the 80's but it's also a story about the personal rivalry between Sinclair and Curry. It really captures the atmosphere of the era, not to mention the fashion !!!
