Let your fonts know who is boss with FontMgr2

By Chris Williams. Published: 16th May 22:32:00 | Permalink | Printable

FontMgr 2 is a flexible, lightweight application from Tom Tanner that allows you to control what fonts are enabled or disabled in your font menus; it is essentially a friendly user interface between the user and the RISC OS font manager, also allowing generated scripts to switch groups of fonts on or off.

Version 1.10 was released towards the end of last month and as well as providing a way of getting round the 255 character limit on the Font$Path variable imposed by the RISC OS font manager, FontMgr2 also comes with some utilities that allow you to scan various file formats to automatically enable the fonts used in that file.

Originally written in BASIC by Andrew Lindsay, a RISC OS user living in Auckland, New Zealand, FontMgr2 was later rewritten in C and bundled with various useful font related utilities. Tom took over development back in 1996, releasing a toolbox version lsst October.

Version 1.10 of FontMgr2 can now:

  • ...more amicably communicate with the RISC OS font manager when enabling and disabling font groups. "I have rewritten the code that tells the font manager what fonts are installed in such a way that the font manager doesn't crash out when surprised by a huge list", explains Tom. "Hopefully, I've also improved the way this happens so that the amount of time taken when informing said font manager is rather less than it used to be."
  • ...cope with font names supplied in messages files.
  • ...use !LinkFS (if available) to avoid copying fonts.

FontMgr2 is shareware but costs only 2 to register. It also requires at least RISC OS 3.5 or later.
