Get your RISC OS machine onto NTLWorld By Chris Williams. Published: 18th May 18:54:35 | Permalink | Printable
You've all seen the adverts and probably been tempted away from your current ISP and telephone company by NTL at some point in time. If you are an NTL customer, you can subscribe to their NTLWorld ISP which should give you free internet calls. Even if you are not an NTL customer you can still use NTLWorld provided you happy with paying a flat monthly rate.
But enough of the NTL sales pitch, Theo Markettos has recently published instructions on getting your RISC OS machine to connect to NTLWorld.
You will need:
- A modem
- Socketeer (or possibly another dialler)
- A modern Web browser with SSL (Oregano demo will do)
- An NTLWorld CD (for the serial numbers on the sleeve)
- Your account number if you have one (from a recent bill)
You certainly will not be needing:
- A PC running Windows
- A CD-Rom drive
- IE5 anywhere near your computer
We emailed Theo concerning his announcement and this is according to the Cambridge student how his NTLWorld guide came about:
"Once upon a time there was Cambridge Cable, a small telco who proceeded to wire up the Cambridge area with fibre. They did a deal with some of the Colleges to wire up student rooms with cable phone lines. Cambridge Cable was then absorbed by the megacorporation that is NTL, and shortly afterwards NTL introduced their no subscription, no phone charges ISP NTLWorld. This means anyone with an NTL line can access this ISP for exactly nothing.
"...Having had an ethernet net connection for the past three years, I was looking for a way of internet access once I lost this luxury. Having an NTL student phone line, NTLWorld sounded like a good idea, so I sent off for the CD. But when it arrived, I had a problem. The CD is Windows and Mac only, and not having access to a PC near to a phone line or wishing to inflict IE5 on my PC card, it wasn't possible to do the signup process. I was stuck, so I left it at the bottom of my drawer.
"A few months later, I was reading a university newsgroup when I came
across a posting by Matthew Garrett, who mentioned that he had
instructions on doing the signup under Linux. A quick look at his web
page, and a few minutes playing with Socketeer, and I had signed up and
connected. Knowing that other people were in a similar predicament, I
translated Matthew's instructions into Socketeer settings and put them
on my website.
"Despite what NTL used to say about student phone lines not having access
to NTLWorld, all my NTLWorld calls have been free. Phone service and
internet for 5.50 a month - not bad!"
