Flash support reaches RISC OS

Published: 23rd Aug 2001, 20:04:53 | Permalink | Printable

Flash support has been with us for some time but now it comes bundled with R-Comp's browser

R-Comp, the prolific RISC OS software company, today announced that its web browser will come equipped with new plug-in support.

From now on the cheap-but-functional WebsterXL will have built in support for Flash, PDF and MIDI files.

Existing users will be able to upgrade their software for free, according to the R-Comp upgrade policy.

RISC OS browsers are playing catch-up to their Mac, Windows and Linux counterparts as development of new plug-ins is slow, if not nonexistent.

The ability to interpret Flash, PDF and, to a lesser extent, MIDI files is regarded as standard by many professional web developers who are increasingly unwilling to provide alternative content for incompatible browsers.

Excellent news. I'd like to know what version of Flash this product will now support. Flash 5 by any chance?

Or is it just the usual R-Comp trick of 'buy what we want, and then don't do it properly.'

ie, is it just the flash plugin we've always had bundled?

If the PDF viewer is based on !PDF, then we've a long way to go, and R-Comp already have MIDI software, so there isn't much new here.

Well done R-Comp. Is this going to provide competition for Oregano?

Have R-Comp said when the update is going to be released?

it's just bundling the already freely available !Flash and !PDF plugins...

But for the ordinary user it will be helpful. The ordinary user will also have someone to complain to.

Granted, yes, I'm not complaining that they will be bundled. Just that from the wording of the posting - especially "built-in" -, it's as if R-Comp have created the plugins themselves.

The GPL Flash plugin is OK, but just supports the Flash 3 protocol atm (varous things in this don't work right). However there is a distinct possibility that this will be updated in the near future to support Flash 4/5 ;-) (I have a version that supports v.3 pretty much completely, v.4 and some v. 5 features, but can say no more...)

As a regular Internet user, any step towards making more web sites accessible to Acorn Users must be applauded - the majority of my net access is Mac based, but one day I would like to take advantage of the software out there and give the Internet under RISC OS a go... any news on Oregano 2?
