XML support for RISC OSPublished: 14th Sep 2001, 18:06:04 | Permalink | Printable
Justin-credible Fletcher ports to RISC OS the software required to use and create popular XML document filesIf you are one of those people who prefers documention on paper then look away now. In this internet age, increasingly more and more documentation and manuals are going digital. A popular format called XML, from the internet overlords w3c.org, allows information to be stored in a logical and structured manner. Spreadsheets, drawings, application configuration details, you name it. XML is a set of rules that dictates how such information should be stored and ensures that any computer platform can read and write XML documents. This means an XML document can be generated on a RISC OS computer and read by a PC user. It's called portability.
Bringing XML to RISC OS is Justin Fletcher, we don't know if you've heard of him- he's written a 'few' things for RISC OS in his time. "Last night, Daniel released 2.4.4 of LibXML and the LibXSLT 1.0.4", writes Justin in his online diary. "I started my port at about 5:20 am. Because I was also trying out the new exslt date support, the RISC OS port took until 7 am. But, we now have a RISC OS port before anyone else. Well, obviously not before unix, but before Windows or Amiga or any other strange system."
As explained in Justin's usenet announcement, "LibXML provides a simple to use, and very versatile XML handling interface. The xmllint utility uses this to perform DTD validation for XML files. LibXSLT builds upon LibXML to provide transformations for XML data." This means XML files can be converted into something else like HTML (web pages) using Justin's software.
Justin also mentions the imminent release of information allowing people to write up RISC OS documentation in XML form. If you would like to get involved or preview the documentation, Justin invites you to get in touch.

Just a brief note from Justin,
"Daniel Veillard decided to do another release of libxml2 last night.
So... another release from me..."
These updates come hot off the compiler, you can find the updated ported XML tools at Justin's website.
