RISC OS web browsing survey results publishedPublished: 18th Sep 2001, 18:26:16 | Permalink | Printable
Designing a RISC OS website? Take note of Eli-Jean's researchSorry you need Internet Explorer 5 or greater to view this site.
You also require your desktop's resolution to be 1600 x 1200 at 16 million colours.
You have permission to scream. When web browsing, this is the kind of hassle RISC OS users don't need and it's something which provoked RISC OS coder Eli-Jean Leyssens, aka pervect, into doing a survey on what screen size and colour depth RISC OS users browse in.
"This poll was specifically targeted at people using/interested in RISC OS", explains Eli-Jean in his announcement of the poll results, "although they would not necessarily have to be using a RISC OS machine to do their browsing with. In short, the results should somewhat reflect the screen settings of people who are the target audience of RISC OS related websites."
The poll was conducted after a request was sent out to on the RISC OS announce newsgroup. Eli-Jean has used the results to create his forthing coming website, TopixWEB which as not been uploaded yet.
"I now know what the new website is going to look like and I've also got some HTML of the basic layout ready, but it will be at least another 2 or 3 months before the entire website is ready" , explains Eli-Jean in an email to drobe.co.uk. "This is mainly due to the fact that it's going to be almost completely database driven, which just takes much longer to setup initially. Anyway, the website is called TopixWEB and can at the moment be found at http://www.dse.nl/~topix. When the new website is ready we will also officially announce our new, easier to remember, webaddress."
The results from Eli-Jean's poll are very revealing and we'd like to expect future RISC OS web designers to take the research into account. Most users browse in 1024 x 768 with 32,000 colours and 84% of people browsing in 1024 x 768 and below. For TopixWEB, Eli-Jean has decided on the following:
- The website will be optimised for 800x600. Although 1024x768 would cover the desktops of almost 85% of the site's visitors, a lot of people woud prefer to not have their browser window consuming all the desktop's space.
- The website will be functional at 640x480, although it may be missing some non-essential extra's
- Maybe a text-only version will be made (to better support lynx etc), but seeing as most people use graphical browsers this has the lowest-priority for us.
- That said, we will keep text-only browsers in mind whilst desiging our graphical version (so, have ALT="" tags for at least the menu images etc)
We'd be interested if anyone decides to use Eli-Jean's research in the creation of their websites.
