KinoAmp updated

By Chris Williams. Published: 24th May 2002, 06:16:14 | Permalink | Printable

Think VideoCDs with audio at full rate in sensational 32,000 colours

KinoAmp, the popular MPEG movie player for RISC OS, has been updated to version 0.17.

"This release is the result of a real team effort and incorporates the many improvements made by Andre Timmermans and Henrik Bjerregaard Pedersen", explains author Peter Everett.

KinoAmp is based on eQ's MPEG playing software, Kino and uses the excellent AMPlayer module to provide the audio. drobe.co.uk believes there's some kind of connection between the aforementioned software and the name 'KinoAmp', but we can't be sure.

According to Peter, the following changes have been made to KinoAmp since the last version:

  • Additional playing controls with on screen display for volume, brightness, contrast and colour.
  • Much improved 256 colour mode and new monocrome mode
  • Improved Audio/Video sync with the option to automatically re-synchronize during playback.
  • Improved frame timing management and a general 20% increase in speed to give smoother playback.

Update
We've been informed that KinoAmp can handle VideoCD movies with audio and full refresh rate at 32,000 colours. Which is quite astounding, in our opinion.

I can confirm that KinoAmp is indeed capable of playing VCD files (MPEG 1) with audio at full rate in high colour. Additionally, it is able to do this at full-screen. Tested on a Kinetic with RISC OS 4.29 and 2Mb VRAM. -- Simon Wilson

It should be said that VideoCD movies should be copied on HardDisc first, as replay from CD drops the frame rate dramatically. Even with HD replay a Kinetic helps, a RPC SA 200 MHz will usually only get 16-17 fps. That said it's fine as long as there aren't fast movements from large objects or from the camera. -- Andre Timmermans
