"It's oh so quiet
It's oh so still
You're all alone
And so peaceful until
You fall in love"
-- Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet
It's a bit quiet on the RISC OS front but don't let that fool you. While the drobe.co.uk staff fuss in behind the scenes preparations for forthcoming site changes, there have been a few developments made public over the past couple of weeks.
Firstly there's been a number of tools released:
- !DiffTB [http://www.xs4all.nl/~erikgrnh/riscos/difftb.html]
- Written by Erik Groenhuis, this provides throwback support to the diff tool supplied with Norcroft Acorn C/C++. Throwback is a neat system that lists line numbers in files, allowing you to jump straight to those line numbers.
- !TempTed [http://www.xs4all.nl/~erikgrnh/riscos/tempted.html]
- Again written by Erik Groenhuis, this tool allows you to edit the text in Template files. Template files are files used by programmers to store their applications window designs and layout. TempTed is therefore useful to people wishing to translate template files or otherwise editting the icon text and window titles without having to load up a full template file editor.
- XML tools [http://homepage.ntlworld.com/justin.fletcher/XML/]
- Justin Fletcher has once again updated the RISC OS ports of the open source XML tools. XML is a widespread structured description format used mainly to document software and other information and is the main format used in the RISC OS documentation project. The XML can be converted to other formats, such as HTML, for rendering by the XSLT tool.
- ViNCe [http://www.vinc17.org/acorn/riscpc_eng.html#vince]
- Vincent Lefevre has updated his VNC client which allows you to work another machine's desktop from your RISC OS machine over a network.
- SPRtools [http://www.armclub.org.uk/free]
- Developed by Dave Ruck, SPRtools provides bitmap format conversion and image processing utilities. These tools are command line based although !ComndCTRL front end scripts have been provided.
- Nutmeg [http://www.imagesoft.co.uk/software.html#nutmeg]
- One thing people miss the most from the Oregano web broswer is a cache. Nutmeg is a commercial solution for Oregano users that fills this gap by providing a cache that stores fetched images and webpages. This means if you need to reload a page or reuse images already fetched, Oregano will fetch them back from the cache which is a lot quicker than having to retrieve them again from across the Internet. Nutmeg itself has recently undergone some optimisation, the updated version should now be in the hands of registered users.
Secondly, an interesting thread on iconbar.com has developed, following emulation master David McEwen's request for beta testers for his spangly new Cineroma video playing software. For the full list of supported formats, see Dave's News webpage.
And finally.. For anyone still waiting for their RiscStation laptop and wondering where on earth it is, you have to look no further than our chums at mylinux.co.uk and their article here.

Star Fighter 3000: The Next Generation review Star Fighter 3000: The Next Generation was born from the 3D0 version of the original SF3K that was ported back to RISC OS and this year freed from programmers' hard discs for the platform to enjoy, writes Andrew Weston. In this review Andrew weighs up much-improved graphics and sound against playability and stability.
