New CVS version for RISC OS

Editorial consultant Peter Naulls reports:

CVS, or Concurrent Versions System, is a way of maintaining program sources both as backup, as a record of changes, and to allow several people to work on a program at once. Drobe isn't going to explain the details of CVS much more than that, since it's been done many times before. See http://www.cvshome.org/ for more information.

You may already be aware that RISC OS has a version of CVS, ported by John Tytgat. It can be found at http://www.cvs.riscos.org.uk/. The one issue with John's port is that you can't use it for accessing CVS repositories over SSH [1]. This is the issue which Maarten Bezemer, the person responsible for the new version, has tackled.

Maarten has taken code used in Theo Makettos's SSHProxy and connected it to his port of CVS. Why is this important? It's important because it allows access to sites like SourceForge and Prowl. While SourceForge allows reading CVS via pserver (the protocol provided in John's client), it only allows writes to be made via SSH; whilst Prowl, the RISC OS hosting site, doesn't allow any non-SSH access to CVS.

I have been using Maarten's SSH for a few hours now, and it seems to work well, apart from some minor issues, which he's addressing. Drobe thanks Maarten for his contribution to RISC OS development.

[1] Ok, technically you can, but you need an SSH tunnel provided by a non-RISC OS machine. You might also think that John's CVS could be used alongside my SSH binary, but this doesn't work for a variety of technical reasons.
