VProtect virus detection module now 3.90 [Updated]As reported earlier this week by our observant friends at riscos.org, Pineapple Software have released version 3.90 (dated 22nd August 2002) of their established virus detection software VProtect.
"Pineapple Software have been providing Virus Protection software for over eight years now, since the first viruses appeared on the Acorn scene", explains Pineapple on the VProtect website. "It has been used by many thousands of people to successfully combat the effects of viruses and recover data that might otherwise have been lost. There are however, at least 223 strains of virus still active on Acorn systems."
VProtect is supplied with all releases of RISC OS 4 as standard and also freely available from the Pineapple site. In the unfortunate event that VProtect actually locates a virus on your system and alerts to you this fact, you'll need Pineapple's commercial Killer software to remove the nasty from your RISC OS computer. Written as a module, VProtect works by intercepting commands that run programs and loads modules, so it can check that any software about to be executed isn't a known virus. It can also detect potentially compromised applications.
Jim from Pineapple got back to drobe.co.uk regarding their recent VProtect release. We asked them why the release was published and was it because new viruses had been found.
"There are not any new viruses covered by this new version of VProtect, as there have been no new ones bought to our attention in the last few months", replied Jim. "Changes include removal of some false detections and other minor bug fixes."
Sleep easy folks.
