VProtect advancesBy Chris Williams. Published: 15th Nov 2002, 10:47:43 | Permalink | Printable
Release confirmed, version 4.03 of the virus detector availableRISC OS is fortunate enough to have very few viruses compared to a few other popular platforms and it's a truth that we, as users, normally boast when asked, "why use RISC OS?" Despite this, precautions still need to be taken for any nasties left over from the old Acorn era. VProtect, developed by Pineapple as part fo their Killer software package, is a module that watches over the execution of every application, module and obey script to detect possible infections and compromises. It's freely available from the Pineapple website and since RISC OS 3.5, it's bundled in the actual OS distribution. We just take it for granted that VProtect is loaded during boot up and continues to protect our files from any viruses left hanging about in the wild.
Earlier in the week, iconbar.com reported on an update to the VProtect module after being tipped off by one of their readers. Indeed, the Pineapple website is now offering VProtect version 4.03, dated 6th November. Now we thought updating a critical module without an actual official announcement seemed slightly, well, odd. Call us paranoid but what if someone had hacked the Pineapple website, uploaded a modified VProtect and then subtly informed iconbar.com that there's a new improved version online? Fear not though, we got in contact with Pineapple to ask about the update and get some kind of official comment.
"We have been updating VProtect recently to allow correct operation with the new 32 bit operating system as well as to keep the version number in line with the recent update discs sent to all Virus Scheme members", explained Jim Daniels of Pineapple.
Jim reassured us that the VProtect online is safe, adding, "If people are genuinely worried then of course for only £23.50 inc vat and postage they could receive a complete virus disc sent by post which would not only contain a guaranteed valid copy of VProtect but also the latest version of !Killer which would allow scanning of all the computer filing systems."
If VProtect does happen to detect a virus, you'll need Pineapple's Killer software to safely remove it. Sleep easy.
