GCC 2.95.4 release 2 out By Chris Williams. Published: 15th Nov 2002, 14:31:48 | Permalink | PrintableGCC development team in full effect
11 months on, and the GCC people bring you another quality release. And drobe.co.uk brings you another quality report that isn't just a Xeroxed press release.
Nick Burrett explains "GCC is a free collection of compilers that provide the user with a powerful tool for translating C, C++ and Fortran source into fast ARM assembler that is suitable for execution on RISC OS."
Indeed, GCC is a compentent C compiler for RISC OS. Best of all, it's free. In conjunction with its default bundled C library, Unixlib, it's an excellent tool for converting Unix programs to RISC OS. It's also suitable for regular RISC OS programming, as an alternative to Castle's Development Tools that we reported on last month. The only downside is that GCC can't do modules.
Although the main compiler version itself remains at the same version and largely unchanged, the list of improvements to Unixlib and supporting tools is substantial, and most are probably too technical to list here. Many represent bug features, improvements to be more compatible with Acorn's tools, or just blatant feature additions to aid Unix porting. We've included the Unixlib ChangeLog back to the last version for your perusal.
As if that weren't enough, the GCC page itself has been updated to include information about various versions of GCC, and a Quick Start guide. It also explains that a 32-bit version is in testing, and will be available soon.
