DeskLib 2.40 signs up to 32bit

By Chris Williams. Published: 18th Nov 2002, 04:05:37 | Permalink | Printable

Over seven years since previous release of the C programming toolkit library

32bit coverage on drobe.co.uk Desklib is a library for RISC OS C programmers and aims to provide a structured and friendly interface to the RISC OS window manager and OS routines. It's like a library for desktop applications, or simply, a desktop library. A DeskLib in fact. Cunning, no?

The last release, as far as we can tell, was in September 1995. Recently however, Peter Naulls and his merry band of contributors have picked up Desklib and continued to improve it. It's their intention to make it the best modern library for C programmers as well as developing support for the Nested Wimp among other features.

"This is a 32-bit release, suitable for use with both Norcroft and GCC 32-bit versions", explains Peter in an email to drobe.co.uk. "Apart from the 32-bit updates, there are various improvements, such as improved use of C typing, and various other minor additions and bug fixes."

Yes I plan on using this too, although I need to wait for 32-Bit GCC and UnixLib. Also any news on 32-Bit !Desk?

If you've got a 32-bit DeskLib, why do you need a 32-bit Desk? ;)

It's really quite odd for releases of software to be 7 years apart :-) I wonder what the next improvements are going to be?

DeskLib is quite a good package and obiously no one wanted to change it. No point in fixing a good thing. However Peter wanted a 32bit version in the wake of the Iyonix and probably saw this as an oppotunity to kick start development in it to bring it up to modern RISC OS standards.

Should probably have let Peter answer that one ;)

I'm happy it's being developed; although it was recommended to me, I was balking at using a seven year old library which wasn't being developed! Stupid, but there you go.

Converted my first C WIMP program from gcc/Desk to CastleC/DeskLib last night.

DeskLib needs some more examples or a tutorial though, that's what made Desk so much easier.

I felt the same about 7 year old DeskLib, that's why I used Desk to start with as it was newer/being developed. I'd like a 32-Bit version just for the competition! ;o)
