Emulator fun this ChristmasBy Chris Williams. Published: 24th Dec 2002, 21:52:14 | Permalink | Printable
Could Father Christmas give you Cybertron Mission for RISC OS? An A400 in Mac OS X? We think not.As it's Chriiistmas, we'll break policy and talk about some emulation and Beeb stuff. If you're allergic to this kind of news then remind us to give you a mince pie.
Mac OS'ed Archimedes updated
If there's one thing about RISC OS 3, it has to be its ugliness. And if there's one thing about Mac OS, it has to be its prettiness. Bringing the two together for old time's sake is ArcEm, an open source application that emulates an Acorn Archimedes A400 machine, available for X Windows, Mac OS, MS Windows and RISC OS. Michael Dales, developer of ArcEm for Mac OS X, has released this week version Alpha 9a of the Apple platform port. We're told has been treated to a noticable performance boost.
"It's still very much work in progress, but it's getting there, as hopefully the screen shot attached attests", Michael comments in his email to us. "Anyway, the new release is a result of recompiling with the new release of the Apple Dev tools".

On a mission to planet Beeb
Michael Foot, responsible for converting Chuckie Egg and Dare Devil Dennis to RISC OS, has turned out a surprise this Christmas for anyone who can remember Cybertron Mission, a game by Micro Power for the Acorn/BBC microcomputer. The game revolves around you, the player, exploring the levels of Fort Cybertron in order to recover treasures to enable your progression deeper into the labyrinthe; all (of course) whilst avoiding swarms of Robots Gone Bad. Like all the memorable Beeb games, the focus is on skill, reward and addiction.
Michael converts BBC micro games by running the original 6502 processor machine code through a process he presumably developed himself which converts each and every instruction to an equivalent ARM processor instruction, allowing the games to run on RISC OS machines. Also, BeebIt, Michael's freeware BBC B emulator has also been updated this week too, see his website for more details.
