GCC and Unix ports progress By Chris Williams. Published: 8th Jan 2003, 23:37:51 | Permalink | PrintableGCC 2.95.4 release 3 must have. Unix Ports Project hits 50 mark. GCC for RISC OS users ought to be aware that an updated GCC 2.95.4 was uploaded this week; release 3 corrects a bug in the backend assembler that, "can cause miscompilation of pre/post index addressing in LDR/STR instructions", according to the GCC site. Even if that last quote washed over your head, we highly recommend you upgrade to release 3 and also consider subscribing to the GCCSDK mailing list if you want to keep track of GCC developments.
The GCC mailing list highlights the amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into GCC and related projects, you'll also have noticed that the GCC webpages were recently redesigned with links to useful sites that may interest GCC users and developers. As a free and effective software development package that's still receiving patches and updates from the GCCSDK team, GCC for RISC OS is seen by many as a crucial and perhaps symbolic mainstay within the software developer community; any platform worth its salt has some kind of free (often open source) compiler kit. This is a group effort we can be proud of.
One endeavour that relies on GCC is the Unix Porting Project. Bringing the best bits of unix to RISC OS, the porting project has currently made around 50 programs available to our platform, this number is steadily increasing we're told. Peter Naulls of the UPP emailed us this week to remind us that the project is still rolling and has plans for the new year.
"The Unix Porting Project now has around 50 programs converted from Unix available for you to download and try, and this is steadily increasing", Peter tells us. "Many of these programs are automatically updated from the latest versions so they are quickly available for RISC OS.
"...The project is for all RISC OS users, there is no programming on your part, nor is there any use of any kind of Unix (unless you want to). This project is most definitely about improving RISC OS."
The Project also soon hopes to launch "Developer Subscriptions", allowing access to the latest versions of porting tools, and help with porting programs yourself.
