South West show photos

Steve Potts and Ian Karley capture the moment

Steve Potts, of the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club, has kindly let us know that his photos of the South West event are now available online for those who missed the Somerset affair. The appearance of the Microdigital Omega at the show, coupled with the fact that the Microdigital staff were reportedly implying that the release of Omega is being held up by some unknown confidential contractual reason and that also several dealers and developers were given Omegas by Microdigital, has promptly resulted in various fiery usenet 'discussions'. All this mud slinging and speculation is oh so very exciting. Really.

Additionally, riscos.org are also hosting Ian Karley's photos of the show too. Our favourite probably has to be this one and not only because we're impressed with R-Comp's over the top "Omega" banner perched on top of the machine, but because we believe Ian's caught on camera Castle's managing director Jack Lillingston trying out the (hopefully) eventual competition.

"that one" might well be Jack playing with Omega, but what is the point in this one: [link] It appears to be a dead Omega behind one of those exploding laptops. The latter could well be running VA5000, I suppose....

Yes, that'll be VA5000 or something very similar on the laptop. that OS 3.1 goodness.

It is a pre-production machine (prototype), with a more recent FPGA image than at the Dutch show in 2002. It's got an on-board XScale and the SA, and it even runs Select (but does not come with it). It is neither a developer box, nor bought, but a demonstration machine, like those on the South West show.

@maus: No, it is not exactly like the ones on the South West show, because these are mostly production machines. I will get another motherboard (production) within a few day, too. Yes, it does run Select (4.33), but there are a few issues with that. IMHO these are nothing wich ROL could not solve within a few weeks, though.

What does it say on the screen before the RISC OS 128MB bit? The writing is too small to read.

On the second video (first switch-on), it says "StrongARM" processor. I think the words before that must be something to do with Select softloading. I could be wrong. -- Simon Wilson, Boulder, Colorado

Ah, the joys of Webster. The comment above was trying to confirm that it is Jack L and that it's me that he's just taken the mouse from.

Unfortunately, the monitor was not up to trying out the bigger video modes.
