drobe.co.uk updates

By Chris Williams. Published: 7th Mar 2003, 23:44:38 | Permalink | Printable

What's been added and what's going to be added

You may have noticed amongst the recent rash of headlining RISC OS announcements that drobe.co.uk has undergone a few changes. These are to coincide with the recent plan to merge the popular AcornSearch site with Drobe Launchpad. You may be aware that AcornSearch and Drobe already possess close ties with Drobe using AcornSearch to provide an essential RISC OS search facility and newsgroup feed. Also, both sites are served from the same machine as drobe.co.uk last year relocated to AcornSearch's sasami machine.

Here's what you can now find on the site and remember, most of these features are still in a beta like stage for the moment. They are all accessible from the left hand table on all drobe.co.uk pages.

New layout in development
We're currently exploring and trying out new site designs here, we're looking for a clean, non-fussy design that loads quickly and provides maximum content.

The forum is back and with more bite, or something like that. Feel free to start a topic on the subject of RISC OS, drobe.co.uk or anything general in the relevant forum or reply to some existing posts.

File archives
They were on AcornSearch, they've been moved to drobe.co.uk. The historic mirrors are back, filled with software and other stuff collected harvested from the net.

comp.sys.acorn.* feed
Catch up with the latest RISC OS usenet "discussions" here.

If you're looking for backdrops, we've got a huge initial selection, although a RISC OS themes selection where people can vote on their favourite (a la other mainstream themes sites) is on the cards.

About drobe.co.uk
We've added a simple page that waffles about this site and the good people who help produce it.

Comments and suggestions welcome!

That is a fairly impressive collection of anime backgrounds :)

I thought the current drobe layout was quite clean anf tres stylish. I think the new one looks a little bland (IMHO :).

But it's nice to see drobe expanding - you can't have too much of a good thing ;)

The beta layout looks promising, but the left hand column is a bit cluttered.

Personally, I think the current layout is great.

Yeah, current layout is attractive, simple and loads quickly. Not sure about the new one - I'd agreee it looks cluttered...

Why have we/I got serif typeface on the front page?

I very much like the current one. It's image light (only two images, and you could get rid of the "made just for you" one), colourful, yet easy to read. Personally, I'd just get rid of the left-hand-column on the current one, and move the login form to the right-hand one. Then it'd be perfect.

I agree with the above, current theme looks professional, the new one (I appreciate it may not be finished) looks kind of cheesy.

I agree. Drobe looks good as it is. Cheers!

New theme's not too bad, although the headlines shouldn't take up as much space on the page as the body.

drobe.co.uk has always had a high quality design in my opinion. Part of this has been the amount of time it takes to render in the slower web browsers.

The new beta design looks like a step backward father than forward to me. Just leave the layout as it is, it's very clean, colourful and I've even modeled my site on it (slightly). ----------- Smiler - :D Alex Melhuish

I think you mean 'fuelled by caffeine" - no such word as 'fueled'. Pedantry aside, I like the new format.

The current website, is clean, efficient and oozes style. Don't change it unless you can improve on the current look.

I don't like the "new look" to be honest. The current look is a lot better.

Actually, "fueled" is a real word - it's just the American spelling :-) So, I agree, drobe *should* be using "fuelled" !

I really like some aspects of the new look - in particular, it's trying to simplify the layout, and go for a Google-style approach for the logo.

It doesn't quite work as yet, but with a bit more simplification, it could do. I especially like the way the footer's done, too.

I hate to do a 'me too', but personally Chris I like the header and footer of the new site, but I think I prefer the original layout of the body of the pages. Drobe remains one of the best laid-out sites I've seen, and I think the current one is just fine as it is :o). -- Andrew Hill,
