Artworks 2, Castle open sourceness, freeware updates and more [Updated 5:49 24/3/2003]Some software news you may have missed - don't worry, this one's on us although we're keeping it brief.
Artworks 2 progress
Apologies if we've already covered this (pretty sure we haven't after a trawl of the archives) however we've noticed that MW Software are recording an online progress log of the development work being poured into the mildly hyped Artworks 2 graphics package which is aiming for a May release. MW Software report they received the Artworks source code from original developers Computer Concepts on the 10th this month despite having secured the necessary paper work late last November. And then eleven days later and we're told the first "alpha 32-bit kernel" of Artworks is complete.
Well worth keeping your eye on, we think - perhaps an RSS feed?
EtherY network driver opensourced
As previously briefly mentioned here, Castle Technology Ltd. have reportedly released their EtherY module as open source under the GPL. The driver source code is for use with Castle's 100Mbit network cards, powered by the SMSC LAN91C111 single chip ethernet device, and was distributed to us by Justin Fletcher after he requested the source from Castle.
Incidentally, Castle are, as iconbar.com observed, running a valid-until-end-of-April special offer on their Iyonix range of XScale powered machines. NoughtPointOne's iconbar.com editor Phil Mellor (who doesn't like us quoting him) cynically suggested that Castle created this special offer in an attempt to draw users away from the Microdigital Omega, adding: "Perhaps further special prices will be announced for the event [Wakefield 2003], especially since at least one Omega there will be made available for free."
We're with you on this one Phil.
Here's a wonderful piece of freeware that I personally use a lot and didn't realise it was still being developed having first found a copy on an APDL PD CD from ages ago. Chris Johnson's graphing program allows you to import, enter and edit (x,y) data values for suitable graph plotting with various "best fit" types, easily configurable graph styles and more. Version 2.65 is now available and is 32 bit compatible.
Apples and Pairs
Steve Fryatt has released version 0.31 of his freeware card-matching game, Pairs. In his announcement, Steve points out this version has "the ability to attach sound samples to individual cards" and these samples can be heard when a card gets flipped over - an ingenious idea and ideal, as Steve suggests, for a classroom.
Last but not least
Finally, let's not forget AcornArcade.com's itchy rash of updates (here and here) which is good because we can sleep easy knowing that RISC OS gaming news is in good hands. Also, the StrongHelp manuals are back online on drobe.co.uk, as previously hosted on AcornSearch.com. And we leave you with news that drobe.co.uk competition entry Frontender is to be the highlight of HHRUG's April meeting - we're told Dave's pleased.
Seems the formatting of this article went what can only be best described as "wrong" but hopefully it's fixed now. Also, we've been told today that Andy Poole's Google toolbar application is now 32 bit and Oregano2 compatible and a beta version is available here. Martin Avison's most excellent TaskUsage software, which graphically monitors processor utilisation of each running application on your desktop, has reached version 1.60 and is also now Iyonix compatible; you can grab a copy from here. Finally, IClear, Martyn Fox's module for people who can't get their heads around control-U in writeable icons, is celebrating its 10th birthday this year and can be found here (and yes, it's Iyonix compatible).
Overdosed yet on Omega photos? It appears you can never have enough hot pictures of elusive Microdigital computer.
