Screenshots and playable downloadabe demo for classic racing game brought bang up to date [Updated 12:00 1/4/2003]

Update Traditional mid-day disclaimer

Sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin. You may recall a superb racing game from the early 1990s developed by The 4th Dimension called Stunt Racer 2000. Well now here's Stunt Racer 2003. Developed by Tempest RISC OS Gaming, the aim is to revive the addictive gameplay of the original and mix in modern graphics, effects, music and more twists using everything the latest RISC OS machines can electronically muster. Yes folks, this is an arcade racing game that, as a RISC OS user, you can be proud of.

Demo version
A free demo version has been produced in conjuction with drobe.co.uk for users to play with until the full commercial release in May 2003. All the details you need including screenshots, Tempest history blurb, Stunt Racer 2003 features and the aforementioned demo can be found hosted on drobe.co.uk. Naturally, we're extremely excited and honoured to be working alongside Tempest RISC OS Gaming, it's been hard to keep a lid on the secret for the past couple of months.

Speaking to drobe.co.uk, a Tempest RISC OS Gaming spokesperson told us they would have completed Stunt Racer 2003 a long time ago however sadly, a hold up in the manufacturing of the CD cases put a substantial delay on the release date. However despite initial NDAed contractural issues with an unnamed third party during the design phase, Tempest RISC OS Gaming are ready to ship orders next month. Tempest's spokesperson declined with no further comment when we asked if Stunt Racer 2003 contained GPLed OpenGL source.

Race ya for it!
More information and a review to follow next month, prior to the game release. Until then, just feast yourselves on the freely downloadable demo which although has been optimised for the Iyonix computer hardware, it is still perfectly acceptable on StrongARM machines once the detail levels are turned down.

Ok, ok, enough teasing, more racing!

'Optimised for Nivia GeForce2' does that mean it uses hardware acceleration on the Iyonix? -- Rob

Nivia is hand cream isn't it? Perhaps you need it to keep your fingers cool while you play it! -- Martin Dixon, LEICESTER

I want to complain in the strongest possible terms about how long the full version is taking to come out. All we get are promises and more promises, but this game seems to be infinitely delayed. -- Gavin Smith, Carrickfergus

In the demo, has anyone managed to clear all 6 trees after the jump at the west of the map? -- Spriteman.

Yup, but you need to use the hidden nitro to the east.

I feel cheated. Here I am stuck at work with only a Windows PC. I will have to wait until this evening before I can even try the Demo!. IMHO If Tempest intend to be decent comercial software house they should have at least produced a version of the Demo to run under Windows to show the PC Gamers what they are missing. -- Victor Shears, Maidstone

I'd imagine it would work just as well under Red Squirrel.

Incidentally, I have the detail set to the lowest setting, so there are no trees visible. That should make the jump much easier!
