Iyonix plug'n'play USB printing

Introducing Printers 1.67

We've learnt today that Castle yesterday issued version 1.67 of Printers, the RISC OS printing application, to Iyonix users which now supports plug-in-and-play USB support. Simon Wilson provided us with some screenshots as you'll see below - cheers Simon, we may owe you a 'Launchpad t-shirt or something.

"I see you've plugged in a printer"

"After loading Printers, you plug in your USB printer and a window pops up asking to identify a PDF [RISC OS printer definition file] to use with the printer", writes Simon, an Iyonix user. All that's needed next is picking a printer definition file and dragging it to the new printer. Castle's USB printing seems to be welcomingly easier and more straight forward than the more manual method required on RISC OS 4 systems. There's also quick access to the necessary PDFs from the Printers iconbar menu.

We'd be interested to find out how many USB printers are supported now under Printers 1.67 and just how fast it is.

Would that work with the Castle USB card for the RPC as well?

More to the point, will it work with the Simtec one?

I don't know about the Castle USB card, but I'd guess that Printers 1.67 is far more likely to support it than the Simtec podule, which uses a different API. -- Simon Wilson, Boulder, Colorado

Of course the Simtec card already supports plug-and-play USB printing and has done since release, although at the moment one does have the hardship of typing a short string into a writeable field.

There is a press release to go along with this and associated product to do with multiple USB printers, which will be made over the next few days. Works out of the box even with Printers 1.53....

No fear there. TIB will take at least a week to publish it :P -- Spriteman.
