Unix Porting Project bursts into game arena

By Chris Williams. Published: 28th Apr 2003, 12:10:06 | Permalink | Printable

Enough console, more graphics. Over 5 new games

The Unix Porting Project has taken a break from serious Unixy utilities and tools to bring a selection of SDL based games to RISC OS. The games, which use a fresh new SDL port rather than eQ's SDL port, range from a 3Dish bomberman clone to a special effects overloaded tron-bike-racing game.

"Thanks to a new SDL port by Alan Buckley, we've been able to make a number of new games available to RISC OS very quickly", Peter Naulls of the UPP explained to drobe.co.uk in an email. Yes, Peter writes for drobe.co.uk although RISC OS entertainment onlookers acornarcade.com broke the story first, here's their article for balance.

SDLBomber: Once you light the fuse, Mr. Bomb is not our friend

Heroes: Ouch

Heroes: 'Like Tron but better'

The full list of games available include Munchman, SDLRoids, Heroes, SDLBomber and CircusLinux. We're not games reviewer material and I personally have the dexterity of a sleeping elephant which makes games playing mildly difficult, but we are fans of graphical demos and light-cycle-racer Heroes is our particular favourite in terms of gameplay and crazy power up and flame visuals.

All the games are freely available online however you'll need to be a UPP subscriber to get support and to request new games to be ported.

Why has there been a fresh SDL port? Is the former one less flexible?

From what I've heard, the earlier SDL port could be more of a hinderance than a help in porting SDL stuff. Cheers!

More of a hinderance than none at all? I don't think so :-)

eQRD made a good effort, but it was a bit unstable due to the way it did stuff, and didn't do windowing, nor did it work on Iyonix without some mods. In the end, this version is better polished, and that was the importat point.

So, if I want to mess around and do my own simple game of an evening, would I be better off using this port of SDL, or using Popcorn? (I am unlikely to want to code a game for any platform other than RISC OS.)

Popcorn. It is nice and easy; can be used from Basic, and is geared towards RISC OS, and your game will be smaller and more efficient.

oops. Popcorn is intended to be used with C, not Basic.

nex has already declared me the winner. However, there's no doubt that he's the most prolific _writer_ of games.

yea, i make gfx, program routines, plan gameplay, make levels, playtest, genrerally slog hard to produce quality games, where as chocky puts a bit of pre-written code through the chocky blender producing an unoriginal played to death low res game that should run at the speed of light, but runs at the speed of a slug with a broken leg.

Zeeb: "If those last two comments from nex were tongue-in-cheek, they weren't obviously so."

Was that a tongue-in-cheek comment?

Nex's comments exhibit some of the most salubrious flippancy I've seen today. Blatant tonguing going on there :P
