White teams with Naulls in SDL portsBy Chris Williams. Published: 4th May 2003, 21:26:55 | Permalink | Printable
More, more gamesGaming Today we've been duly informed that Neil "Nex" White and Peter Naulls have teamed up to port to RISC OS a number of SDL based games. Peter is incidentally the drobe.co.uk assistant editor.
Earlier this month, Peter of the Unix Porting Project launched his first foray into the gaming arena, putting down portable utilities and console tools to bring a number of games across to our platform. Neil has also been in the news with his original games, he's also this week released Range, a tricky target practice game. The question for the past month has been who will win at head to head games programming between Peter and Neil? Like a stereotypical Disney movie, they've united to strengthen the porting front and all with no bloodshed, dammit.

Avoid the wandering BSODs
The new games range from mindnumbing puzzles to comic arcade titles. Our favourites have to be RockDodge, where you have to blast your way through an ever advancing asteroid field equipped with just a Dalek green laser and also SuperTux, a Super Mario Land style platformer where you must help Linux mascot Tux (a penguin) to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend.
Old school gamer Neil lately commented to us that if a game didn't fill you with homicidal rage, it isn't a game. This reminds us of the classic medically and recklessly addictive, gameplay overflowing games from the likes of The Fourth Dimension, Krisalis and others. Neil also mumbled something about monkeys and onions but we weren't actually paying attention.
You can find Neil's and Peter's ported games online for free download. We're also told the SDL site is ready to recognise the RISC OS ports of the games in their listings.
