Forthcoming RISC OS Shows

No sooner than the excitement and revelations of the Wakefield Show have settled in everyone's minds, and it's already time to think about other RISC OS shows this year.

Here's a quick list of what's in store for the rest of the year:


German RISC OS Show

The German RISC OS Shows happens on Saturday 31st of May and Sunday 1st June. The email from the organisers to Drobe news seems to have gotten lost, but no matter as all the details (in German and English) are on the GAG website. Entrance is 7 Euros.

Perhaps one of our German readers might offer to write up the show for us.


Big Ben Expo

All the details of the of the Big Ben Club's show are on their website. Unfortunately, they're all in Dutch, but don't let that put you off, especially since the organiser, Aad Bezemer, has been so helpful with my own arrangments.

The Expo is in Nieuwegein, which is easily reachable from any of the Dutch airports by bus and train. A round trip plane ticket will cost you about 75UKP, and if you book online, the hotel is 107 Euro per night (117 for two).

The show is on the 21st of June, and entrance is also 7 Euros. Drobe will have a presence at the show, and will have a full report after the event and looks forward especially to meeting all the Belgium, German and Dutch users.


South East Show

Although not for 5 months, these things have to be organised well in advance, and the South East Show is no exception. It will occur again in Guildford College, and the date is the 18th of October. Perhaps they can also be encouraged to use the same spelling of RISC OS that everyone else does on the show website, however.


ARM Club Show

Even further away, in November, the ARM Club Show will again occur at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham.

i wouldn't have said wakefeild was packed, infact i would have said visitor density was quite thin compared to previous years. but maybee i've just lost weight.

There were several RISC OS shows held in NZ in the 90s.

If you want information about the Wakefield show's performance, you should be asking the organisers, not us.

Subjectively, I was about 3/4 as busy this year as Saturday last year. Objectively I was about 2/3, although that's influenced hugely by the profile of products I sell from one year to the next. It's better than I could ever have hoped for given the physical size of the show.

There are a lot of the "interesting" people still in the market, so I tried to chat to them as best I could, but 6.5 hours is a short show. Apart from the rush to get everything done in one day the second day is what I missed about Wakefield this year - I usually don't have to try to sell anything on Sunday, but can relax and talk to people a lot more.

I can imagine this was a little frustrating for the more congenial members of the RISC OS scene.

I find it quite interesting that people feel they can "bend the ears" of developers and traders such a lot at RISC OS shows - certainly more than your average PC market. I for one spent a fair amount of time waiting in line at Wakefield stalls while a gentleman told the chap behind the counter about how things have changed since he had an Atom. In one way this is slightly bothersome, but in another way it makes me appreciate how friendly and cuddly the RISC OS world can be (when you're not reading the bitchin' on CSA groups, anyway).

Special salutes and stop-carryons go to traders at Wakefield, who happily listened and gave friendly advice far above their call of duty. David Holden, Andrew Rawnsley, everyone behind the STD stand - to highlight but a few.

We've asked the WROCC for comment, but there's been no reply. It is strangely difficult getting statements out of RISC OS organisations.
