Viewfinder plugin and patches are back, plus more [Updated 05:18 27/5/2003]

It's the weekend, it's time for the news that didn't quite make the headlines.

Viewfinder plugin, patch back
VFSetup website

Ian Jeffray's VFSetup and Justin Fletcher's VFPatches are back online this weekend and available again for download. VFSetup aids Viewfinder graphics card users in configuring their Viewfinder hardware. VFPatches allows third party software to select screen modes provided by the Viewfinder card.

It's been some time since Windfall Engineering's Viewfinder card was in the headlines.

Update
We've learnt over the Bank Holiday weekend that developer Windfall Engineering have issued version 1.53 of the Viewfinder firmware (the one you pay for) and version 1.50 (the free version).

RISC OS Select specific theme
Select Silver theme

Select 3 user Michael Gerbracht has "created and 'stolen' some sprites to create a blue-silver looking desktop". Combining the new iconborder effects of Select 3 and suitable brushed metal textures, Mike's zipped up all the collected goodies into a Select Silver theme for users to try out.

Look out for an article on specifically customising Select, soon.

And finally

Chris Bazley can't sleep at night as he's worried people are using an old version of his funky ScreenGrabber utility that has a habit of corrupting the RMA (which is a Bad Thing™). Instead, users should immediately upgrade to version 2.08.

Earlier this month, Iconbar reported on RISC OS being used in automated telephone systems. Perhaps if one or two RISC OS companies were using it, after picking up the phone, we could expect to hear, "Press 1 to hear this month's excuse, press 2 if you're from Drobe so we can stick you on eternal hold, press Internal error: abort on data transfer at.., press 5 if you wish to order, or alternatively hang up now if you're expecting an ordered product to turn up..".

Finally, this is something we don't recommend because Google Groups never forgets a rant, Stuart of Stuart Tyrrell Developments has been venting some scalding steam on usenet by spelling out the Simtec vs. Castle USB situation.

mavhcnews rules you all. Why was the VF stuff offline? Has anyone created a Select 3 theme that doesn't suck?

The "VFStuff" was offline because I'd had prettymuch zero feedback on it and didn't have a ViewFinder anyway. There's a lot of leeches in this community - people are keen to suck everything off your website and don't give a hoot for feedback. That's why I can't be arsed for producing RISC OS stuff any more. The most I really ever heard was people moaning about something or other. It's available for download again because I updated it to suit _my_ requirements and do at least have a little care to produce the best software I can. Rant over. Get back to your leeching.

I don't think you should complain because people download your stuff and don't offer feedback. If they don't have anything to say, they don't have anything to say. If they want to moan, then that's a shame, but you can't expect them to only tell you how much they like your stuff and leave out the bad bits.

Ian, just to let you know that I've downloaded VFSetup and I think it's pretty good. On the other hand, I might have to moan a bit to Justin as the VFPatches (now deleted) caused quite a few problems. Naturally, of course, I didn't take any careful notes so there isn't any point (it would just be moaning rather than a genuine bug report).

Well I'm always surprised that I get anyone at all saying how good my software is. I don't really see why they should, although I admit it;s nice to know someone appreciates what I do. I suppose I could just use a download counter to see if people are actually downloading. Bug reports are more interesting because then I get to reply and tell them how I don't have time to fix any of the bugs right now ;)

I think expecting something for nothing and not giving any feedback is common to most platforms on the Internet :-(

And I don't think you need to restrict the term platforms to computers either.

I *usually* try to send an email to the authors of any free program I find useful. (i even made my son send an email thanking the author of some games he liked)

I cannot even work out where to find the menu shown in the Draw file called configuration!.

Any help will be greatfully recived.

I get very little feedback for my Red Dwarf site. I just take it as normal - it doesn't bother me. Site logs are more than enough to please my ego :-)
