Got Omega?

By Chris Williams. Published: 29th May 2003, 23:33:48 | Permalink | Printable

Will the real deposit holders please stand up

As picked up earlier today by content thirsty Iconbar, there's been various changes to the Alpha laptop specifications on Microdigital's website. Yes, whatever - when Alpha? When Omega?

When we spoke to Microdigital today, they wouldn't comment on the specification changes and wouldn't confirm whether or not their Omega and Alpha products had been sucessfully delivered to end users. Hence this short article.

So, don't ask us where the Omega or Alpha are. We honestly don't know anymore. However, if you're a Microdigital customer, we'd love to hear from you if you've received a machine. Until they start appearing on people's doorsteps, we recommend you look elsewhere for Omega related news, such as Iconbar who seem perfectly content with the Omega situation.

On a mildly related note, last week VirtualAcorn declined to comment on the possibility of selling VirtualRiscPC (as bundled exclusively with the Microdigital Alpha) as a separate product for existing PC users.

VirtualOmega, anyone? ;)

So the Alpha is a slightly more up to date Notebook now hardly worth the money itself. IrDA, PCMCIA and a 14 inch TFT display has my 5 yeras old Notebook too.

And the more interesting point is if these "new" features are avaiable for the RISC OS emulator? If not then all that is not worth to mention i think.

I think MD are quite correct in their actions. I mean, surely the last thing they want is publicity if they are in the run up to 2 major product launches.

Wait a minute. I think I might have got that round the wrong way. Give me a sec.

Right, my first statement could be corrected by either removing the word 'last' or put a 'not' after the 'are'. Your choice. :) -- Spriteman.

Woo, bit of a dig at TIB there!

I used to be real excited about the Omega, and gave great thought to buying one, but now it really looks like it will never appear, and I'm almost past caring (almost!).

I think the laptop is quite good value, considering you're getting RISC OS 4 and Select with it (how much would a RiscPC user pay for that?), unfortunatly, I don't like no-name PC clones, and as I don't need Windows, all I'd be getting would be a laptop in which the graphics are sh*t, and the networking does not work.

It's all very well asking the real deposit holders to stand up. But any deposit holders supposedly were invoiced for the full cost (i.e. not just the deposit) by MicroDigital a few weeks ago.

Will anyone own up to having been brave enough to pay for an Omega in full?

Come on, don't be shy...

You have to admire them really...

When have grandchildren I'll tell them about the long wait for the Omega, and how we all talked about it at length, then they'll wonder whether to tell me that it's *still* not out.

Maybe people can only buy them under NDA ;)

Ah, yes. NDA - popular way of generating interest in a product that may or may not exist.

I can't speak for other Iconbar staff here, but I personally am not happy with the Omega situation at all. However, I don't think it would be right for me to use the Iconbar website as a place to air my personal opinions on the matter.

As far as myself and the Iconbar website goes, if there is news to report, I'll consider reporting it (assuming someone else doesn't get there first and do a better job of it). My own personal feelings (whatever they may be) have no place as headline news.

I may air my views in the forums or on the comments side of things, but I've been biting my tongue recently on this particular subject as I've been hoping to obtain an Omega from Microdigital for testing for the Hardware guide website. Ditto for an Iyonix from Castle. So I'll continue to bite my tongue on these matters for a while longer but to be honest, I'm begining to lose interest in the whole idea.

So, does the Iconbar know of anyone who has paid the full amount for an Omega?

I don't. ;) Cheers!

I have placed a deposit on both the RiscStation portable and the Microdigital Omega. In both cases by credit card so that if and when I MIGHT need to recover the deposit, I can just go to Barclaycard. I have had an invoice from Microdigital but have asked them to let me know when the SCSI card and network card (which I ordered at the same time) have been tested and are working - that's when I'll pay up in full - again by credit card for the reasons above.
