Published: 4th Jun 2003, 22:14:53 | Permalink | PrintableMid-week round up of MSN Messenger, Flash plugin, Frontender, printer drivers and more [Updated 09:45 5/6/2003]  We seem to have fallen into the routine of doing one or two round ups of news a week, which is good. Here's some new stuff you can lay your hands on this week.
Philip Hardy has emailed us to say version 0.24b of his MSN Messenger client for RISC OS users is now available after a bug fixing session. This version also supports interactive help. "I'm delighted that MSN Messenger has evolved to the point where we can deliver to end users a still finalised, almost stable realisation of our overall goal with the MSN client", Phil told us, definitely making good use of our press release template.
The RISC OS Flash player plugin by Leo Smiers is now 32 bit compatible thanks to John Bell. In his email to drobe.co.uk, John suggests the 32 bit version is mostly useful for people using R-Comp's WebsterXL on their Iyonix computers. The Flash plugin is released under the GPL and the source code is therefore available for download along with the built plugin.
Dave "Spriteman" Watson has let us know that his Frontender software has been bug fixed following feedback from users. Frontender allows users and developers to produce user interfaces for command line based software.
SpamStamp, Jan-Jaap van der Geer's anti-spam email tool, has been much discussed in the RISC OS newsgroups after we reported on its initial quiet release. Now it's got its own webpage. "Although quite a lot of people already use SpamStamp, it has, until now, not had a very official status since there only was a [zip file] that could be downloaded from my website, not linked from any other pages. Since so many people are interested in SpamStamp, I decided that this should change", commented Jan-Jaap in his email. The key to SpamStamp is its ability to learn what unsolicited email (aka 'spam') looks like in order to better identify and trap spam email in the future (basically, a Bayesian filter).
Freeware home accounts app, Account2 has been updated. Version 1.25c of Kevin Edwards' software can be found here.
(Update) Jonathan Briggs has uploaded a website about the various printer drivers he's written for RISC OS and also the availability of other drivers from other third parties.
Also, don't forget riscos.org's Wakefield 2003 report. Strangely, Ian Karley's article mentions the existance of mass storage USB device drivers for the Castle USB solution, which is news to us unless they were hinting at the Partis Computing's PowerUSB announcement.
"If we keep this going it'll look like there's some big secret that only the select few know about, then we can adopt a high handed attitude to "outsiders". It'll be just like drobe.co.uk."

Go-faster stripes for PC-format media access app
Fat32Fs, by Jeffrey Doggert, lets Iyonix users read from and write to large FAT-formatted media, such as Flash-based removable media. Drobe reader Richard Ashbery got in touch to say the software is now much faster - it can read 100MB of data off a Sandisk 4GB CF Extreme 3 card in 59 seconds and write it back in 57 seconds, showing write speeds have improved by a factor of four.
