riscos.org.uk sub-domain blip

Get emailing

Users with .riscos.org.uk sub-domains pointed at their websites will need to re-request their sub-domain following an unfortunate accident, we've learnt. Webmaster Mike Stubbs has asked affected users to drop him an email if they wish to get their sub-domain back again. Key sub-domains such as cvs.riscos.org.uk, discknight.riscos.org.uk and digitalcd.riscos.org.uk appear to have been restored.

"I want as many users as possible to contact me before the old server is switched off and the old subdomains die", Mike told us earlier today.

The riscos.org.uk website itself is empty at the moment so we'll dig deep into the article vault to pull out information on the free riscos.org.uk subdomain service. By dropping Mike an email, you can request that whatever.riscos.org.uk points to a RISC OS related website so as to provide a memorable URL. For example, the easily remembered bookmaker.riscos.org.uk points to the mouthful of a URL, users.argonet.co.uk/users/tigger/bookmaker/.

A significant number of riscos.org.uk sub-domains were in use before this glitch.

riscos.org.uk launchs free sub-domain service (oh, weren't we green back then).

I think they've all been restored, as www.orrery.riscos.org.uk works, and I didn't request it to be back up! :) -- Andrew Harmsworth, Cambridge. www.gcse.com owner and author

No, they've not been restored. The DNS change will be made at any point soon and then the old subdomains will die.

*Someone* asked me to restore orrery.riscos.org.uk so that will work!! -- Michael Stubbs, Leeds

Ah - I misunderstood. I thought you said that they didn't work any more, so requested the change. But seconds later, tested it, and it still worked... -- Andrew Harmsworth, Cambridge. www.gcse.com owner and author

OK, from 8.00am tomorrow (Tuesday the 10th of June 2003), riscos.org.uk will be operating with it's new DNS and as DNS servers around the world update, the old subdomains will become inactive.

I'll deal with requests as quickly as I can to reduce downtime. Just don't expect a confirmation email as I might be slightly inundated :-) -- Michael Stubbs, Leeds

I don't think I need my subby anymore, because banners.iconbar.com is RISC OSy enough :)

Of course, you should all cough up the 10 quid or so to buy your own domain, and host it with Pepperfish. :)

Completely. Oh yes. Although I'm sure any current customers will say they like the service. :)
