Fresco, Oregano going placesBy Chris Williams. Published: 11th Jun 2003, 16:05:46 | Permalink | Printable
"Surprised to see me?"When we recently interviewed James Bursa, of the Netsurf project, we tried keeping on the topic of the development of the open source web browser and avoided comparing it to other larger RISC OS web browsers, purely because NetSurf is still very much work-in-progress. However, the browsers Netsurf will be up against include Oregano 2, WebsterXL and Fresco. Whereas Netsurf and WebsterXL are developed primarily for RISC OS, Oregano and Fresco are special in that they are developed outside of the RISC OS arena.
Oregano, supplied to RISC OS users by Castle Technology, stems from Oregan's TV Interactor. We've learnt this week that the browser is being used in the network kit for the Sony Playstation 2 games console. BBC News reports that the network kit, which recently went on sale in the UK, can be used with Sony's new broadband gaming service.
ANT Ltd.'s Fresco, the desktop version of which is bundled with RISC OS Select, is also going places although it's very unlikely that there will be any further development on the RISC OS version. As pointed out to us by Manuel Timmers (who also emailed iconbar.com, so no t-shirt for you, Manu), ANT's web browser is apparently going to star in some new videophone-over-IP gear. Specifically, Fresco will be holding up the online services side of Leadtek's set-top box.
The partly-Fresco powered STB is aimed at teleco's and ISPs in Asia and the US as well as Europe so as suggested by IconBar's Richard Goodwin (who works for ISP Freedom2 so we'll leave him to comment on this IP communications malarky), maybe we'll see Fresco beside UK phones? And then Oregano in the lounge, with the Playstation?
Here's to a StrongED powered mobile phone - write code and SMS at the same time.

NetSurf team founds formal organisation
During a public meeting held over IRC tonight, the NetSurf team formally founded an organisation "in order to have a bank
account and appropriate protections for the funds and assets of the
NetSurf Project". Michael Drake was elected chairman in a three-way race for the top spot, John-Mark Bell was made treasurer and Daniel Silverstone was elected secretary. The group, which is partly funded by donations from punters, will hold its first AGM at the Wakefield 2009 Show on April 25.
