ChoX11 source releaseBy Chris Williams. Published: 18th Jun 2003, 13:46:36 | Permalink | Printable
Bringing X Windows to RISC OSPeter Naulls, of the Unix Porting Project, has followed up the binary library release of ChoX11 with a full source code release. ChoX11 is a replacement for the XLib programming library, which is the core library for X Windows clients. Although ChoX11 is in an early stage of development, the plan is to port X Windows software to RISC OS using the ChoX11 library so that the X clients run as native applications.
"The importance of X applications to RISC OS cannot be understated", Peter Naulls explained in the release. "There are hundreds, if not thousands of X applications which could potentially be ported to RISC OS to plug gaps in the software base. In addition, this software is continually developed with no or little effort from RISC OS developers.
"All X Windows applications at the bottom level rely upon Xlib, including those using the many popular toolkit libraries such as Xt, GTK+, Motif, Qt. Improvements in ChoX11 will allow apps built with these libraries to run natively in RISC OS. Please support ChoX11."
X Windows based software includes applications like the spreadsheet Gnumeric, the graphics package Gimp, the web browser Dillo and the instant messenger client Gaim; the X client list on sourceforge reveals just how extensive the X Windows platform is.
We first saw ChoX11 last September when the web browser Konqueror was given as an example to demonstrate how bringing X Windows software to RISC OS is crucial - and crucial is the right word given the gradual slow down in native software development. Although, we're pleased to see the release of native software like Artworks 2, the X Windows system is essentially an application gold mine and today's library source release will hopefully start the rush.
As the source code is now available, developers are encouraged to contribute code to ChoX11 to help increase the pace and breadth of development.
ChoX11 library (includes RiscXLib releases too).
CD release now includes ChoX11, RiscXLib and SDL, as well as DeskLib and GCC versions.
Peter Naulls is a drobe.co.uk editor. ChoX11 also includes some source code contributed by this editor.
