SQL and ODBC, German OS 5 and more

Rummaging through the inbox this week, we came across the following software news. Firstly, Richard Windley dropped us a note and a half about the ODBC related tools and libraries now available on his website, source code included too. Richard's tools are non-32 bit compatible and use rink to dynamically link components. ODBC is a widely accepted database access interface.

As well as the driver manager and PostgreSQL driver, a configuration front end app and another app to launch SQL database queries are provided. Richard stresses that his software is pretty unstable so users should expect crashes.

"Before anyone asks, no I haven't ported a mySQL driver", Richard told us. "I only use PostgreSQL at the moment (personal choice - I don't want to get into any discussions about which is best and why). Someone did express an interest in doing a port but I'm not sure if anything is happening on that front.

"I'm hoping that once the driver manager is stable everyone will port the driver for their favourite RDBMS and we can build up a library of drivers."

Next up, German dealer a4com have announced the completion of a German territory for RISC OS 5, allowing German users to use RISC OS 5 in their native language.

"The task was limited this time not only to the pure translation of the resources, but also to the adjustment of necessary Territory modules to the 32 bit environment as well as additional work for the extraction of the UK resources [into] a form suitable for the translation", a4com's riscos.de service explained. A publication of the new territory will be made soon.

Side stepping technical stuff and onto an arty topic, Proaction, (aka APDL), have rescued Sherston Software's Classic Clipart CD and treated it to a thumbnail index. All the artwork is in Drawfile format and you can drop APDL an email if you want to order a copy.

Briefly, the "multi-currency accounts package for RISC OS", EnBank has been updated and the MakeModes manual has been recovered and published online.

Finally, a note to all our beloved Amiga readers (including you, yes you, Amiga Technical Magazine): RISC OS isn't AmigaOS, you can't have our icons. Sorry.

If you're getting 404s on Richard's ODBC pages, try this link, which is known to work. Richard says he'll contact his ISP's tech support once he's finished getting married tomorrow - congratulations Rich.

Excellent! ODBC for Postgres is going to make my life much easier. One less reason to turn on my PC. -- Steve

Just when I advertised the SBASE develper FS and was concentrating on my PDA apps to windows via ODBC I now see this. Time to get virtal acorn out I think and see if I can link to the pocketPC.

I imagine that I can use sbase to design an app that odbc's to a windows table via virtual acorn then used the pocketPC to odbc to this at the windows side.

I have mysql and mickydoft sql server 2000 so I have all the windows tools. Imagine linking an iPAQ app to RISC OS. Who would have believed it?

cheers bob
