New Printers+ issued

Open source version mirrors Select's !Printers

To follow on from RISC OS Ltd.'s announcement, back in October 2002, that the source code for the Printers+ front-end would be made available and developed as a open source project at Sourceforge.net, we have been informed of the first binary release under the new scheme - Printers+ 1.91.

David Marston, the project administrator, explained "Printers+ 1.91 is functionally identical to the previous version 1.90b4 released through RISC OS Select, but is being released as a common starting point for open source Printers+ development."

It is exciting to see this announcement when one considers the need for vastly improved RISC OS printer support. Although this project does not give developers access to the back-end PrinterDumpers system (the software that directly controls the printer), it does allow the opportunity for more people to contribute to the way in which the RISC OS printing system interacts with end users.

As we noted last October, RISC OS Ltd. has stated that "this does not signify that RISC OS is to become an Open Source Operating System." They believe, however, that certain components will benefit from open source release.

All users may download the new version and enjoy its new features which, up until now, were only available through RISC OS Ltd.'s Select scheme. However, always remember to make a back-up of your existing version just in case you experience any difficulties. In fact, any bugs that users may find can be reported through the bug tracking system on the project's website. New features may also be suggested.

To assist with development, support and announcements, three mailing-lists have been created. Details of these can also be found on their website.

  • Prototype affordable Braille display in development
A low-cost computer-controlled Braille board has been prototyped by a RISC OS-using university student. Undergraduate Edward Rogers hopes to sell his completed units for as little as 200 quid each to schools and families to allow more blind children to continue learning Braille. And he said he wanted to launch his venture using RISC OS-powered kit before offering a package for other platforms.
