Wakefield Videos

Evidence on tape [Updated 9:35 6/07/2003]

Due to popular demand, we've aquired some videos from the Wakefield Show, courtesy of Julian Zimmerle. They include a quick tour of some of the stands at the show, Paul Middleton's enthusiastic talk about the wonders of Select 3, and David Atkins' talk explaining MicroDigital's difficulties in developing the Omega.

Julian assures us the reason he doesn't have Castle's presentation is because his batteries ran out on his new video camera.

Unfortunately (for you, we have plenty of space on drobe.co.uk), the videos are quite sizeable (29MB, 527MB and 419MB), so I hope you've got broadband. If there's demand, we might be able to make up CDs for a small donation covering the cost of media and postage to your favourite RISC OS portal (see the poll results).

Thanks again to Julian for providing these. We hope that we can make this a regular feature of shows.

Update

I've produced some audio only MP3 streams which are slightly more digestable (but still large) versions of the two presentations - 20MB for the MicroDigital presentation and 25MB for the RISCOS Ltd one. These are 64kbps mono to keep the size down, which makes them lower quality than the original, but doesn't make much difference to audibility. There's a lot of background noise in the MD presentation, I'm afraid, but that's the same for original too.

I've watched the "stands" one... Not really worth viewing, but I can't wait for the MD presentation to finish downloading :>

Drobe and Julian, thank you thank you thank you! At last someone has done this, though it's a shame about the Castle presentation, as that's the one I'd have liked to have seen most. Still, I'll go watch the others. Thanks guys! -- Gavin Smith

Sorry guys, 90% of traffic is going via the LiNX which is cost bandwidth, and it's getting to serious amounts of traffic atm (10Mbit avg, peaks at 30Mbit).

I'm going to have to pull the downloads until I get a dedicated UK viewable bit of ethernet I can use.

Shouldn't take more than a week. meanwhile I might post some links to pulling them from my DSL line (which xfer is slower,.. but free). -- Ian Hawkins (g0tai)

Wondered why it stopped :( If you can get it up again somewhere (so to speak), that would be great.

On another note, Julian says his batteries ran out so he couldn't film the Castle presentation - I see he also avoided the Castle stand in the walkabout movie...conspiracy theory? :) -- Gavin Smith

Someone could put it on gnutella and then we could get it with cocognut.

Pity Cineroma isn't out yet or they could be xvids at half the size.

The first 10mins of ROL's talk were interesting anyway, a built in HTML renderer for IFR would be very cool.

Good plan, I'll put it on Gnutella in a second...

Microdigital one is now shared on Gnutella (cocognut!) from my DSL line, more will follow once I get them onto my mac from my SGI box. -- Ian Hawkins (g0tai)

Do a search for 'RISC OS' on gnutella and you should find the mpegs. -- Ian Hawkins (g0tai)

If you can't get them off gnutellanet, the proposed CD option is probably best ;)

Actually my battery ran out while doing the tour of the main show, just before I got to the Castle stand, wich is pity, since it was almost totally deserted whenever I got near it ;-). Anyway, the reason why could not record Castle's presentation was simply, that I had to get some very urgent work done at the time (I am so glad for my palmtop with an SSH-Client :-).

I'm glad we can see that JGFZ isn't at all biased, then, from his comment :-)

I'm not saying that I'm not biased, I'm saying that it was bad luck that I didn't get Castle on the videos. I am biased, but I would still have liked to get them on video.

I've had to throttle and limit the amount of connections to the webserver on my dsl line, if you get 500 internal server error, then there's basically too many people downloading stuff. -- Ian Hawkins (g0tai)

Thanks for providing the mp3's. I had to reboot my machine just after passing the 50% mark on the RISCOSLtd show.
