Published: 7th Jul 2003, 14:05:14 | Permalink | PrintableAPDL updates, fighting spam and more  The ownership of RISC OS has changed for the third time in five years but third party software development hasn't dried up by any means; here's a roundup of recent freeware news.
APDL/ProAction have been busy. They have announced new versions of Rhapsody 4, a music notation package, and Desktop Repton, the appropriately named desktop version of this popular RISC OS game. Although only minor bug fixes, it is encouraging to see this development after APDL/ProAction called on users, last month, to suggest improvements for their software catalogue. They've also announced that they have "active development plans" for Compo, WimpBasic and Sleuth. More information is contained on their website.
There has been much discussion of late about spam (or unsolicited emails), revealing the dangers that both businesses and individuals face as the problem grows. There are many ways of combating the problem and SpamStamp is one such solution. This program uses bayesian filtering techniques to detect spam. This means, as the author Jan-Jaap van der Geer explains, "that you do not need to set up all kinds of rules, but instead the system figures it out by itself. It does this because every time it makes a mistake, you tell it that it took a wrong decision. This then increases SpamStamp's ability to detect spam".
You can download SpamStamp's latest incarnation from the author's website. Version 0.12 improves support for emails that contain MIME, base64, HTML and binaries. And if you're still confused about spam, keep an eye on Drobe over the next week for a comparative review of AntiSpam and SpamStamp.
Those Iyonix users who wish to indulge in a little nostalgia will be pleased to hear that BeebIt has been updated to support Castle's latest machine. As Michael Foot states in his latest announcement, "BeebIt is a freeware BBC Micro computer emulator for RISC OS versions 3.00 and above. It emulates the Acorn BBC Model B, BBC Model+ and BBC Master 128 computers". For more information click on the BBC link on the author's website. Beebit 0.53 also corrects a number of bugs that are detailed at the same site.
Next, Roger Darlington has announced a new version of his Digital Signal Generator. This useful program, which allows users to create digital audio files to test equipment such as CD players and sampling cards, has also been updated for the Iyonix.
