Repairing, restoring legacy Acorn kit

All the gory photos online

Close up of the inside of an A4000It comes as no surprise to us that Acorn related hardware produced from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s is still in use today by some users - the kind of users who won't let go of RISC OS 3 or, like me, keep an A3020 ready in case I spontaneously feel like playing Quark or Stunt Racer 2000. However, despite so far surviving the tests of time, upgrades and repairs are inevitable and it's handy to have a website like this one to show how everything fits together inside your Acorn computer.

Richard Hall's recently publicised Classic Acorn website has photo galleries to illustrate how to take apart various Acorn era machines in order to carry out repair, upgrade or restoration work.

"I decided to make an Acorn related website as I have always liked the brand. Mainly as they were what I grew up with at school during the 80's a la BBC-B's. This was all pre M128 and Archimedes era", Richard told us today. "The final thing that re-established my interest was acquiring later Acorn machines second hand like A3020's, A4000's. These were way out of my price range when they were released so I am making the most of them now.

"As for what I have planned next. It all depends on webspace. I have the site split across two accounts at the moment, but I hope start the LOGO and Turtle Roamers section soon, fantastic bits of kit. Also obtain more examples of Acorn machines for my personal collection. The idea being having at least one example of every machine Acorn made."

My cat has just urinated on my A4 and it no longer works.

Does that make it a bad cat?

My uncle urinated on the cat the other day by accident.

Does that make him bad?

Straying away from the A4 bashing, Quark has been made RISC OS 4 / StrongArm compatable. (Not tried it with Select yet) Cheers!
