Software news By Ian Chamberlain. Published: 30th Jul 2003, 22:49:14 | Permalink | PrintableInternet radio, CVSed libraries, filer shortcuts, RISCOS Ltd. sales and more Even though this is usually the quiet season for software announcements, we continue to receive news abouts lots of exciting developments.
Users who enjoy listening to Internet radio stations will be pleased to hear of a completely new MP3 streaming player. The author, John Duffell, reckons that "it is more reliable and better structured than any previous RISC OS MP3 streamer released". Stream, version 1.00, apparently works on all of the 26bit machines and can play music from, for example, MP3.com. An add-on to the program is planned for the near future so that Streamer will be able to support other audio streams such as Shoutcast. The program, and the modules it requires, can be downloaded from the author's website.
R-Comp Interactive has released a new version of their popular printing solution, UniPrint. The universal printer driver works by sending print requests to a Windows PC on your network and then uses the printer-specific Windows driver to communicate with your printer. The new version adds support for Alpha Laptop owners. R-Comp Interactive explains, "this allows Alpha owners to print to a printer attached to the laptop via the Windows drivers present on that 'side' of the machine". For more information and purchasing details see the UniPrint page on the R-Comp website.
Andrew C. Poole has been busy developing !Searchy, a replacement for his popular !Google application. The announcement stated "!Searchy is an application written for RISC OS users to search the Internet quickly and easily from their desktop". Although it's not available to end-users at the moment, you can read all about it, and see some screenshots, at the !Searchy website.
Since our article comparing spam fighting utilities, the author of SpamStamp, Jan-Jaap van der Geer, has reported "an enormous increase in the number of emails to register [the program]". We are pleased to hear, therefore, that a new version has been released that adds to the functionality and effectiveness of this wonderful program. One of the main features is the increased hashtables which allows SpamStamp to recognise unsolicited emails more easily. For more detailed information see the author's website.
In gaming news, Phillippe Donsback has produced a new version of "the famous scriptable patience game," SPatience. We are informed that the main new feature in this version is the abilitiy to play "Spider" family patience games. We have also learnt that two versions of the game have been created to tackle the incompatability problems with RISC OS Select. Phillippe has taken on the maintenance of this game and has made available the new versions, along with 250 patience scripts, at his website.
In other news, Peter Naulls has set up CVS access to DeskLib and ChoX11 programming libraries. For more information see the Desklib and Xlib websites.
Martin Avison has created a 32bit version of !QuickFiler. The author writes "it is a utility which allows you to use many standard shortcut keys in conjunction with the RISC OS filer windows". Version 2.02 should now work with all versions of RISC OS, including RISC OS 5. The original author, David Thomas, has given permission for it to be distrbuted via Martin's website.
And finally, the RISC OS Foundation has reported this month that RISCOS Ltd. shifted approximately 500 upgrade copies of RISC OS 4 between July and February this year, bringing a total of about 5900 copies of RISC OS 4 shipped to date. RISCOS Ltd. also enjoyed receiving their 900th subscription to Select earlier in February and are considering printing a "fully detailed updated user guide covering all the new features in Select" - drop them an email with "Select Book" in the subject if you're interested.
