Chris Morrison presents OrganizerTo kick start writeups of usergroup meetings, Mark Stephens has written up the appearance of popular life management app Organizer at the RISC OS User Group of London. If you've recently attended a group meeting and want to share what was discussed, drop us an email - we won't bite. Lots of news and rumours tend to get heard first at user groups, which we're eager to pounce on.
ROUGOL meets every 3rd Monday on the month at the Blue-Eyed Maid, a pub just round the corner from London Bridge station. It is a great place to listen to all things RISC OS in London, washed down with a few drinks and maybe even some food. Clearly the holiday did not seem to affect attendance because the room upstairs ROUGOL use was packed and it was standing room only for late arrivals.
After some initial 'fun' with the projector, Chris Morison gave a very detailed and entertaining talk on his !Organizer application, explaining its development and ongoing plans and answering questions as he went along.
The program began as a simple replacement for Acorn's Alarm program and has developed far beyond that. Modelled on a simple 'Filofax' diary it is very intuitive and easy to use. It now includes a fully featured diary, addressbook (which integrates with Pluto), a journal, todo list and comprehensive search facilities. It is highly configurable. It was clear from Chris's demo that a great deal of care had gone into the design and implementation of the program.
In response to one question, Chris felt that this design was one reason for its popularity. He was very amenable to suggestions (although he felt some were impractical) and showed his wishlist of enhancements.
The latest version of Organizer includes sophisticated export facilities (allowing the user to export data and also produce printed copies of the diary and addressbook with templates in Ovation and Impression).
If you have never tried !Organizer or are using an older version it is well worth looking at the latest version to see what is on offer.
Next months meeting should be well worth attending with Peter Naulls talking about Linux on the Iyonix and his UNIX Porting Project.
