Computer Shopper waves goodbye to RISC OS: Tis a sad dayBy Chris Williams. Published: 27th Oct 23:54:11 | Permalink | Printable
Taken from RISC OS reporter Jim Nagel's usenet posting...
The latest fat issue of Computer Shopper mag (154) hit the newsstands
yesterday, and there *is* an Acorn column in it.
sadly, however, it's a farewell -- but farewell only in the form of a column.
as i explain in the text, i argued the case to Mr Big Editor (Jeremy Spencer)
that Acorn is different from Amigatari in that there is a lot of development
going on in our niche. but his mind was made up: the mag is undergoing
one of its periodic redesigns, and he is chopping the minority columns.
the Acorn farewell is a month later than the other two only because i
was on holiday (hence no columns in 152-153) and he forgot to tell me.
but i got a two-page farewell, whereas Amigatari had only one page each.
so i spend the first 500 words telling this story, then prove my point by
following with 1500 words of current RiscOS news.
Mr Editor is happy to continue covering the minority platforms elsewhere
in the magazine: i already write about Arm and RiscOS in the news pages
(e.g. Microdigital's StrongArm2 machine in this issue), and i can propose
standalone features from time to time (the next issue, 155, will have
a report on the Epsom show). it could turn out to be a Good Thing,
moving from a ghetto section at the back to the middle of the magazine.
i'm open to suggestions from readers for such features -- please email me.
Touching isn't it?

ArtWorks 2.9 set for Wakefield 2009 launch
The latest version of graphics package ArtWorks is set to be unveiled at this month's Wakefield 2009 show - and will allow PNGs and other bitmaps to be exported with alpha transparency intact. Click on the link with NetSurf, Firefox or some other capable browser to see an illustration of the exported translucency effect. The software will also gain extra features to the editing of text, including smart quotes and automatic ligatures, according to developer Martin Wuerthner.
