Select 3i2 available to subscribers By Chris Williams. Published: 6th Sep 2003, 00:03:24 | Permalink | PrintableRISCOS Ltd. rolls on RISC OS 4.37 Version 3i2 of RISC OS Select has been published online this evening by developers RISCOS Ltd., for Select subscribers. The install includes RISC OS 4.37 and this week's Toolbox release. Select 3i2 is described as the "final release version of Select 3" and is presumably the stabilised online release that will precede the eventual CD distribution.
Select 3i2 installing itself, takes less than 10 minutes to complete
It's RISC OS 4.37. It's version dated in August although the ROM says it was built on the 1st September.
The full feature list of Select 3 was unveiled during May this year when Select 3i1 was first released. Since this release, Select users have offered bug reports and feedback on the Select mailing list to help the Select developers stabilise Select 3i2. We are expecting Select 3i2 to be somewhat of a 'feature freeze' - this is where no major new features are added to the OS as developers concentrate on correcting any bugs and other critical work. We've also witnessed work on the Toolbox modules too, which are pretty crucial components for both the operating system and third party applications.
RISCOS Ltd. say Select 3i2 has gone through "in-depth" testing for RiscPCs, A7000s, Micos, Alpha portables, RiscStations and VirtualRiscPC, although testing is still underway for the Omega. The Select 3i2 webpage also adds that "it is intended that the CD will include some work in progress versions of Select components that are suitable for Select".
Update
The CD release is due in 2-3 weeks, according to RISCOS Ltd. Also, new to this release, the Drawfile module now supports path clipping, !Paint allows full anti-aliased text painting, the AppleTalk client has been updated and various components have been updated "to avoid Castle's undocumented use of Wimp_Extend".
Select vs. RISC OS 5
You may be aware that Castle have a feature comparasion chart of RISC OS 5 vs. Select 3. Well, now RISCOS Ltd. have their own Select 3i2 vs. RISC OS 5 feature chart. Feel free to compare and contrast each table while we're reminded of the Microsoft sponsored Windows vs. Linux study.
