Microdigital: "Working flat out for Omega Christmas"

By Chris Williams. Published: 31st Oct 11:45:37 | Permalink | Printable

Microdigital have stated on their website that they are working flat out to produce their amazing Omega RISC OS system in time for Christmas. While it may be a long way off for us, Microdigital -fuelled by the RISC OS world's reaction to Omega- are promising so much. The Omega machine will sell for 999.00 and for an extra 50 the machine will be supplied with a full CD writing system.

Quoting from the Microdigital website:

We are pleased to announce the exciting new Omega StrongArm computer which will run the amazing new 1GHz 80200 Xscale processor.

Omega the most powerful RISC OS computer yet designed brings together the world class technologies of ARM and Intel together with our own in house developments.

The importance of the Omega computer to the RISC OS world is immense as it addresses the twin issues of hardware independence and 26/32bit operating system. Developments used in the Omega have unlocked ARM risc desktop computers from the straight jacket which have for too long held back this exciting market.

Omega is a dual processor design, powered by the Intel StrongArm 110 processor with provision for second processors such as the 733MHz - 1GHz Intel 80200 Xscale or ARM 9 processors.

Our engineers have designed a new RISC OS 4 compliant chip set which provide a memory controller, graphics controller and I/O sub system. The graphics chip is an enhanced version of the Lightning graphics chip, which is capable of both 2D and 3D acceleration with resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 x 24bit colour at 72Hz.

Other features include:
PC133 SD RAM, which is expandable up to 1GB
4 x 32 bit 33MHz PCI slots
2 x ATA 66 Ultra EIDE interfaces
4 x USB (12 Mbit) ports
SoundBlaster compatible PCI sound card
20GB hard disc
52x CD ROM
floppy disc drive
56k modem
RISC OS 4.03

Now that's scary..
