RISC OS 4.02 Boot patch issued

By Chris Williams. Published: 19th Nov 2003, 12:21:34 | Permalink | Printable

And what's this about Select ROMs?

RISCOS Ltd. logoRISCOS Ltd., the developers of RISC OS, have this week released a freely available patch for RISC OS 4 and users are recommended to install it.

According to RISCOS Ltd., the patch corrects a "long standing" bug in the !Boot sequence that affects the recently released Toolbox upgrade. In addition to this, it also corrects a fault that prevents RISC OS 4.02 users from easily switching to a softloading Select version of RISC OS.

For those who don't know, the !Boot sequence is the application that RISC OS executes when the computer is turned on and is about to start the desktop. It usually sets up individual users' choices and customisations and also acts as a central area where system resources are kept. RISC OS Select has seen various updates and features added to the !Boot and it's also where Select stores its softloadable ROM images. The Toolbox is a set of modules that third party applications can use to provide a consistent and structured user interface.

Also, as reported in this week's usergroup article, RISCOS Ltd. hope to demonstrate their new Select ROM chips this month in Bristol, UK. It's hoped that users with an irrational fear of softloading their OS will prefer to upgrade to a ROM chip based Select.

Presumably the ROM Select will boot faster and leave more free RAM as well, so the fear might not be totally irrational :)

Perhaps from ROLtd's point of view there other reasons to want a ROM Select as well, like for embedded-type stuff?

Presumably, anyone new to RO4 might as well get the Select ROM rather than the 4.02 ROM and Select upgrades.

They said it'll cost depending on how much select you've subscribed to. Hopefully current select subscribers will get them at an appropriate margin over cost. What I wonder is will this be on the premise that you return your old roms. My biggest niggle with softloading isn't the loss of RAM, it's the fact that I have to wait for the hard disc to mount twice (i.e. boot then reboot into select). On a select features note, I wonder if they're planning to fix cut and paste in writeable icons. I mean, at the moment it's against the style guide and most other programs. I did report it but unfortunately there's no bug tracking thing.

In what way is it against the style guide ?

grek1> You shouldn't be able to see the caret and selection at the same time, clicking should remove the selection and place the caret, using the arrow keys should remove the selection and make the caret appear and probably other stuff I forgot since I haven't got my guide with me. Text editors don't follow these rules in general but that's because of how they are used. Having the caret and selection visibale in writeable icons doesn't even allow you to do anything else, it just confuses (me!). Hope that answers you question :) Having checked out the select features database it's not there even though I'm sure I typed it in ages ago.

I suppose the ROM Select will be the same price to all Risc OS users (3.5 to 4)and that only current Select can save on cost. When I know more I will be able to judge if its worthwhile.

john: ah, I agree thats how it should be. Regarding the feature database: maybe you should try again - maybe it disappeared when smartgroups made their last cleanup.

john> I agree, the current operation under Select feels wrong. Perhaps we should tell ROL though? :)

I'm not sure what to do beyond mentioning on the select list. I can't even find the message now and it should also go in the bugs database. Do you want to do it this time.

jlavallin: I think it is highly unlikely that RO3.5 users can get the Select ROM for the same price as RO4 users. In fact, I am pretty certain. Why should they? Up to now, RO3.5 users had to buy RO4 in order to be able to use Select. So, RO4 users have already paid part of the 3.5->Select upgrade path.

If you buy RISC OS 4 and Select, then you get a one year subscription to Select. If you just buy Select on ROM, you get the latest version of Select but no subscription - is this correct? For this reason, I would expect the Select ROM to be cheaper than RISC OS 4 plus a Select subscription.

In a way, though, it'd be good if the Select ROM cost the same for everyone (although I doubt it will do). It might not be strictly fair, but it might encourage people who wouldn't have upgraded from 3.x to do so - and a bit of (for want of a better word) subsidisation from 4.x users might be a good thing. I've got RO4, and I wouldn't object.
