Nettle, email and spam, ODBC and more

round up logoCongratulations to the developers of Nettle who seem genuinely excited about the anniversary of their open source terminal client - last Sunday's release of 0.2040r was precisely one year after the previous public release of their popular comms software. To celebrate they've officially released a new Iyonix happy version and have included a whole host of new features and improvements, such as:

  • Re-connect support for 'dead' terminals
  • Option to scroll automatically to the bottom of a terminal on keypress
  • Now prefers to use RISC OS Select's socket pollword feature, instead of relying on SocketWatch
  • Local terminal options, reduced memory usage, better selection handling and lots more where that came from

Nettle developer Ian Jeffray said, "Nettle is the terminal emulator and telnet client for the RISC OS operating system. It utilises the ZapRedraw module for speedy display and is a fast, clean native implementation."

He also described this week's release as a culmination of "a yearsworth of bugfixes and improvements". The Nettle team have also updated the program's French resources, which nicely coinsides with eQ's pledge to support more of our European friends. Also, look out for a drobe.co.uk interview with Nettle's Alex Macfarlane Smith.

Tim Ballance has created a new FTP server with the rather inspired name of FTPs. Currently available as a beta release, the software allows RISC OS users to share their files with other FTP client wielding networked computers.

A new email client called TapirMail has been announced by David Llewellyn-Jones. Although functionally similar to most email clients, this client holds emails in memory rather than storing them to a hard disk drive. This, David inform us, "makes it ideal for people who want to read their emails on more than one machine, or who check their mail on the move". He went on to say that "it can also be very handy for removing spam and viruses when using a slow connection". Dave also made it clear that TapirMail has been designed to complement the existing range of RISC OS clients rather than to replace them. And because it's shareware, you can try before you buy.

The new Spam filtering software we mentioned in the last round-up, Bogofilter, has since had a number of changes made. Stefan Bellon said that "the major changes are the fact that you don't have to create the initial wordlist manually, it's done automatically now, and the executables are much smaller than before". Upgrade now.

In other news: Mr Programming Man, Philip Ludlam, has announced 32bit-updated versions of Makatic, a tool to assist the management of C, C++ and assembler projects, and Every, a file and search utility. The sources for the programs are available, along with the programming libraries and tools that Philip looks after, on his web-site.

And Richard Windley, from The Really Small Software Company, has been working on his ODBC for RISC OS. Richard explained that "ODBC is an industry standard API for connecting to local and remote databases with the client application needing to be aware of the type of database it is connection to". Richard's web-site has lots of other useful database tools, too.

FTPs works fine here, small and fast prog. I don't feel anything slowing down here! RO-4.29 (select) here.

Why is this fine prog classified as beta?

i couldn't find anything wrong yet!

"John made it clear that TapirMail has been designed to compliment the existing range of RISC OS clients rather than to replace them."

Who is John?! And does David Llewellyn-Jones know about him? ;-)

I very much like the idea that TapirMail has been designed to 'compliment' the existing RISC OS clients: "Messenger Pro is great!", "Yay, Pluto!", "How wonderful that Posty has lost its flags again!"...

I've tried TapirMail, I've rushed to register it (the cheque's in the post, David!), and it *complements* Messenger Pro wonderfully. Highly recommended!
