Merry Christmas from Drobe

That's all folks

[Animated version]
Forgive me for the profound observation but yes, another long year has passed, signalling the imminent embarkment of the next. Once again it's a pleasure to wish you all a very merry and safe Christmas and a happy, comfortable new year. A little advanced warning to the scrooges: this article isn't just sugar coated, it's practically brimming with E numbers.

The Drobe.co.uk site is something we're immensely proud of and we're humbled that you, yes you lot, have taken the time to read the site day in day out. I have to no less than warmly thank everyone who has contributed articles and content, donated cash, posted a memorable comment or otherwise given us advice, encouragement, inspiration and criticism. As Editor, I'd also like to thank Peter, Ian.H, Ian.C and dgs for their work and support in keeping me sane and the site running smoothly. Although you see only one name in an article byline, others will have helped polish off that story.

Also, much respect to the companies and individuals who took our sarcasm, praise and criticism with good grace and listened to our and your suggestions. Additionally, thanks (by the way) for not suing us - it was becoming difficult finding people to represent us.

Ok, let's talk statistics. To date, we've served 2.2 million pages of HTML this year. Our busiest month was October, with around a quarter of a million pages served during that period. The fact that our traffic keeps increasing, usually, from month to month strengthens our faith in the RISC OS scene and motivates us to keep at what we love doing. The fact that we're comfortably running an article a day, on average, shows there's still life left in our exclusive, minority platform. It's also pretty cool to see forums and news sites outside of RISC OS linking to us; anything to help spread the word.

What were the hot topics of 2003? In first place, the most read article was the story on the 800MHz Intel XScale, which is code compatible with and faster than the IOP321 used in the Castle Iyonix. In second place was our report on RISCOS Ltd.'s vision of the future and also the Select 3 gallery. Third place goes to the Wakefield 2003 show and our breaking news coverage of the event and eyebrow raising developments such as the VirtualAcorn-RISCOS Ltd. pact. Fourth place rests the exclusive news that the Omega was shipping along with end user commentary - the availability of the Omega remains a controversial issue that has been strongly debated throughout the year. Finally, the fifth most read article of 2003 is the release of Select 3i2 and our analysis of RISCOS Ltd.'s offering.

Other memorable articles include the MSN lockout, Castle facing GPL violation allegations and later nabbing RISC OS from Pace and of course lots more - from the hot software releases to user group activity to the tongue in cheek gag articles. Stunt Racer 2003, anyone?

As for 2004, we plan to run a series of interviews with developers and we'll be pushing for more opinion and 'hands on' articles to give the site a more practical edge that includes more from the end user perspective. We're also toying with other ideas that should make the site more interactive and enable a better flow of information from you to the editors, but we'll float these ideas when they're ready to escape the mental drawing board. As always, if you have any news, article ideas, or you want to write an article - just drop us an email. Your input is welcome.

So, one more time and this time with feeling, have a very merry Christmas and a terrific 2004. Drobe.co.uk will return in the New Year.

I feel an MJ-king-of-pop moment coming on:

"There comes a time when we hear a certain call When the world must come together as one"

Isn't it nice that everyone in the RISC OS world gets on so well? ;)

Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year!

Oooh, my 'end user commentary' on the Omega is in fourth place -- how very cool ;-)

Thanks to the Drobe team for all their hard work, adding sparkle, amusement, and the occasional sprinkle of cynicism (ahem!) to their reporting of events in the RISC OS universe. Without a daily dose of Drobe, life would be...

Seasonal felicitations (and a happy Chanukah!)

I love Microdigital's new answer-phone message.

"Thank you for calling Microdigital. At the present time we are unable to take your call as we have everyone working and getting orders out..."

All spoken by a rather distressed-sounding woman who sounds a bit unconvincing really. ;)

Excellent work guys - Drobe really is the best RISC OS portal. Whether its the latest software news, another Omega scandal, or just a humorous editorial, the articles are always enjoyable and it's great to be able to keep up with the news in the RISC OS world with such regular and high-quality reviews and articles. Well done Drobe crew :)
