tofla moves to iconbar.com

Coders' retreat expands

The tofla website, a free and growing online library of articles and information for RISC OS programmers, has packed its bags and relocated to tofla.iconbar.com, thus joining the NoughtPointOne empire of websites.

The tofla site was launched in July last year by Kris Adcock, who is alledgedly a 'DARC heckler' and initially went under the Futurama inspired alias of Morbo Jones. The name 'tofla' comes from the text in a garbled message usually displayed by confused applications that try to read from the start of logical memory. The site now boasts over 150 articles, all of them sourced from Archive, Acorn User (sorry, Qercus), usenet and elsewhere.

"I'm just someone who wants to turn a bit of spare time into something useful for the community. I think RISC OS will die pretty quick if people stop developing for it, whether that's PD or commercial stuff", Kris told drobe.co.uk this weekend. Developers are, of course, encouraged to contribute to the digital archive.

Quite possible then that Kris has updated the site after I dropped him an email.

Chris. Just me.

I stumbled across the previous version of the tofla site some months ago whilst on a random walk in cyberspace. I immediately printed out several of the articles, which are now carefully filed, least the site should close. Nice to see it's not only still around but growing. One thing that could be usefully added is all the old Acorn User *Info programs and one liners; you can learn so much from a short but clever piece of code.

The Acorn User *Info programs are (c) their authors (unless the program says otherwise) and so if you wanted to do that you'd have to contact all the authors. AU only have rights to distribute the program for 3 months, IIRC.

That's off the top of my head, so I reserve the right to be wrong.

AndrewD/Diomus: Aye, I fixed it when I received Chris's mail.

On the subject of *Info's: yes, the subject of who owns material is a difficult one. For example, I have permission from Steve Turnbull (and latterly, John Cartmell) to reproduce AU material - up until the point when AU stopped paying people for articles. So anything recent I find I have to find the authors themselves.

Also: I'm trying to reproduce articles which are primarily about communicating with RISC OS, rather than little graphical ditties or full-blown apps. This is why I've duplicated Mike Goldberg's Acorn Computing articles on sprite plotting, but didn't bother duplicating the ones about weather satellite pictures, flowerboxes, or whattever. But if anyone ever things of a particular article they saw in *Info or whattever that they thing would be especially useful, let me know and I'll contact the appropriate parties for permission.
