APDL 32bit more, DOS games, updates and more

round up motifAs part of its on going 32bit compatibility drive, APDL has announced the availability of a 32bit version of font editor software Dr. Fonty. "As well as enabling you to produce new fonts or add extra characters and weights to existing ones, [Dr. Fonty] can also repair many fonts which have damaged scaffolding, etc" explained APDL's Dave Holden. "This can enable fonts which work on a RiscPC but which do not render properly (or at all) on the Iyonix to work correctly."

screenshot of DrawWorks XEAPDL has also released DrawWorks XE online for free, which is the cut down version of its DrawWorks package. DrawWorks XE is compatible with all versions of RISC OS from 3 to 5. Users of DrawWorks Select can also now upgrade to a 32bit version of DrawWorks Select, while APDL are aiming to launch a new version of DrawWorks in time for this year's Wakefield show. Another APDL app to get the 32bit treatment is ProArtistan24 as the bitmap graphics graphics package originally developed by Clares is now Iyonix compatible. Contact APDL for pricing and ordering details.

Alan Buckley has ported DOSBox to RISC OS and released his work via the Unix Porting Project. DOSBox is a vintage ix86 PC and DOS emulator, ideal for playing old classics. Suitable games can be downloaded from dosgames.com and dosgamesarchive.com, see the screenshots below for an idea on what can be played.

Death Rally

The world's favourite plumber

Prince of Persia 2

Super Worms Racing

In brief
Mega desktop enhancer app Director is now up to version 0.37. Toni Reiser's popular Excel file reader ViewXLS has been bug fixed and now supports CSV export. Database app Powerbase has been updated with various new features and enhancements, from record editing to table searching. Andy Wiseman has released a collection of statistics (or 'sadistics' depending on your view of mathematics) apps suitable for education. Debugging aid Reporter has been updated with author Martin Avison developing spin off app ReportTA, a BASIC TRACE file analyser. The vector graphics package with a particular like for Sibelius SibToDraw [zipfile] now features a symbol editor and a drag'n'drop based library manager amongst other new additions. Web gallery generating utility PicIndex is now 32bit compatible. FTPcEdit, the bookmark manager for FTPc, has been tweaked, as has Dave Edwards' website publishing app SiteMatch.

And finally
Iconbar are currently running a topical poll, asking simply: "Select. Iyonix. Which best describes you?" At the moment, 22 percent of voters are Iyonix users who want Select while another 30 percent would buy an Iyonix if it could run Select on it. Does this reflect public opinion? I guess one needs an Iyonix for DOSBox to run at an acceptable speed? It crawls a bit on a StrongARM... :(

Drobe's 1000th article won't be the next one, don't be fooled by the URL. Due to the way articles have been rescheduled and moved around, the article id has been skewed. We'll let you know when the real 1000th article goes live :)

mrchocky: he put a smiley there!

I've been a fan of no frills layout for ages. Unfortunately it doesn't apply to the forums, on O1 I find that the forum listings of threads take ages to finish rendering, something to do with it having trouble with the right hand column.

Anyway the content is great so no need to read the forums :)

I think artifact1000 is something to celebrate just because it's a round number (just like the year 2000) and any excuse for a bit of excitement (ok, well I've been writing up my project for weeks so anything is good in my opinion :)

Lets hope that the 1,000 article did not require as much recoding as Y2K!

What is the maximum article limit in drobe?

john: I have improved the forums view for you so things in O1 should render a little faster now.

Just gave this a shot in VirtualAcorn. Runs Wolf3d about 6-8fps here. Not bad for a first release! Being able to drop a directory on to the window and have it mount that as 'C' would be even better. :-)
