A driver for suitable PCI based serial port cards was released this week for the Castle Iyonix. The software is compatible with products that use the SUN1889 and BB16PCI958 chipsets, such as Qtec cards, and has been known to work with Caller ID units and the author's UPS monitoring software.
Robert Kinton, a self employed lighting engineer, developed the software and SerialDev driver after studying the relevant datasheets. Although the Iyonix already has two serial ports, when you're controlling external hardware and equipment with good old reliable RS232, you can never have enough serial ports.
Robert told fellow Iyonix users: "Using a dummy modem cable to a RiscPC works fine. In theory 921600 baud is possible, and a loopback test internal to the card works fine. Anyone who has success with this module please let me know and I will start a list of known working applications and hardware."
