The annual high-stakes billion pound soap opera known as the UK footy season is now well under way. But one nutty team has been playing almost non-stop for nearly a decade, drobe.co.uk discovered this weekend. Stumbling across their website, we were amused to find a five-a-side football group comprising of ex-Acorn staffers and their pals.
Playing on Wednesday and Friday afternoons in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, home of the old Acorn headquarters, the group has over 90 players on its books. The club has published all its statistics and various sarcastic player profiles on its website since going official in March 2002. A few of the names will be familiar to anyone who has read through the credits lists buried inside RISC OS as easter eggs.
According to the site: "For nearly 10 years a group of ex-Acorn employees and friends have being playing 5-a-side football for a hour on Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes. From the start, the games have been organised by Owen Love and it is in his memory that the games he loved so much will continue.
"Some members of the club have played over 250 games and still ask every week how much they have to pay to play."
As well as an appeal fund to buy a new 12 quid ball, which failed to even reach a tenner, the site also includes some hilarious moments from the team's past. See the links below for more.
